I took a shitty general labor job at some random company last year because I needed a job and couldn't find a good one. Turns out it had been bought by a very major company, and now I make good money with great benefits at a top 10 fortune 500 company.
I completely lucked into a career.

They are still hiring too, and having a hard time finding people, and the people they do find just aren't very good. It is upsetting because I know there are people out there in OPs position looking for a good job that can't find one. Same position I was in for most of my life

Literally the opposite of what I said, dipshit.
I took a shitty, low-paying job as a temp expecting to only stay until I could find something better, but I busted my ass at work and as a result, they made sure I was hired on permanently before the transition to the new company.

Sadly, the #1 job skill that causes businesses to recognize and reward good employees with quick advancement and attractive pay/benefits is the one skill that eludes the population of pontificating zoomer grumblers who infest these threads...

That skill being "just don't be an idiot, OK?"

          are you moronic
The company he works for obviously isn't hiring the high school drop outs that they inherited in the buy out

fricking moron lucked into a job he's not qualified for and wouldn't get hired for if he applied and he wonders why they are "short" of people

            Anonymous

            >he's not qualified for and wouldn't get hired for if he applied
Not really true, the reason they made an effort to hire me on when they did not do the same for other contractors hired around the same time is because I am knowledgeable about things that my resume would not really suggest and it resulted in me being able to fill in in other areas that I was not strictly qualified for.
I would argue that I lucked into the position because of timing, but I don't think anyone could say that it was unearned. Had I not worked so hard, I would still be employed, but I would be a contractor instead of a corporate employee at a company that employs probably a couple million people but very few actual employees. You are probably accurate in that I would not be hired on if I applied today.

            >isn't hiring the high school drop outs
They aren't anymore, but the job that I signed on to do initially was not difficult and [almost] anyone could be taught to do it.

            >and he wonders why they are "short" of people
I am not following your logic. How does me supposedly not being qualified result in them being shorthanded?
They are not getting many resumes and the ones they do get aren't very good. They have to let people go shortly after hiring them because of various things like poor work ethic or inability to learn the job.
I am new to the area so I don't have anyone to refer to them. If it was in my old location I could supply them with several people that would be inexperienced, but very capable.

My point in my original post is that it is possible to get a good job even it is through unorthodox means. You might not be able to jump to the exact spot you want, you might have to take the scenic route.

I didn't intend for this to be about me specifically, but I am still reeling about the whole ordeal as you can probably tell

Nope, it is somewhere that looks good on a resume, so not Amazon, not walmart. You can probably narrow it down based on context clues. I mostly just don't want to say because the ink is still wet, so to speak, and it would be real easy for them to lay me off, as is common when a very large company buys a very small one

I literally told you exactly what I did, moron. My advice is that sometimes things work out, but maybe not in the straightforward way you would expect.

He's a fricking liar who nepotismed his way in or built his success on corpses. Don't envy scum.

I'm not lying. Nothing in that post in unbelievable or extraordinary. I took an entry level position that was temp-to-hire and I impressed them so they hired me on and then the company transitioned to a larger company that had been in the process since around the time I was hired. Because I was an employee and not a contractor, I now work for a really good company with good pay and benefits. I did not know anyone in the company.
Not sure which part you are having issues with. No one fricking died for me to get my position, moronic c**t.

When I was going to college, I needed an on campus job to get some federal work study money.
I really didn't want to work in the dining hall so I took a shot and emailed the IT department student employment coordinator and asked if I could apply. She said yes.
I got the job as an incoming freshman which was unheard of because most people assume you need to be on campus first. The job was super plush and most importantly afforded me 4 years of experience I was able to stick onto my resume.
I got a job immediately after graduated in 2011 making 60k. My peers hated me.
Unfortunately I got too wienery and tried to do sales around 2017 when I should have stayed in IT. They ultimately caught up to me and now I'm playing catch-up.
I now project manage and have kids. Finally broke 6 figures over a year ago. Also about to close on a 3k square foot house which is bigger than any place I've ever lived. Not sure what I'm going to do with all of that space.
    Heya

I dropped out of college and became a railroad conductor when I was 23. Base pay was right at $100k. 10 years later the raises have brought base pay up to $145k.

The worst part? I started working to finish my BSME and should graduate in the spring. If I actually take a job in the field and leave railroading I'll be taking a ~50% pay cut.

I kinda did this once on accident. Fully intended on getting my masters and enrolled in first class. Applied for a job and put "in progress". Got the job and years later boss says " I thought you had a masters?"

I still use that joke. I was at a family party a few weeks ago and one of my nephews or 2nd cousins(I don't fricking know) kept trying to talk to me about some cartoon he watches. There was a cork coaster on the table next to me so I knocked it off the table.
    >hey can you get that?

    >he kept giggling and wouldn't let me stop knocking it
I know how that sounds, and I would never do that. He's only 4, but he's half Italian and I didn't want to shame my manhood if the stereotypes turned out to be true. Point of the story is get a fricking job.

Tell them I am officially an employee of [X company].
    >Mom is happy for me, congratulates me, says it will look great on my resume
    >Dad says "when I worked for [Y company], if I saw [X company] on a resume that came across my desk, I wouldn't even look at it"

pick a trade you want to do and join the union. its really easy you just go to the unions local training center and say you want to join the apprenticeship. once your in the union you no longer fill out job applications your benefits follow you not your employer also in the union unemployment bennies are super easy to do. you just go on the out of work list and they call you to the job. I work plant shutdowns 6-8 months a year and collect unemployment the other half works out great
