You wake up and it’s a dystopian end of the world nightmare. Most people dead. No electricity. Maybe zombies. Definitely cannibals and gangs of thief’s roaming the cities. What weapons and what tactics do you use to survive? Do you go rogue hunting inna woods alone? Do you find people to team up with and form your own gang?

For the tactic I'm thinking human rat. I am in the exurbs. Plenty of houses around but they are spread out and surrounded by woods and fields. I'll sneak from house to house scavenging for food and bullets. I'll live in a house for a few days to a few weeks until the food is gone. I will hide in the attic or crawlspace when other looters or the helicopter comes around. I don't want a fight. I just want to live inside your walls eating your cans of bush's baked beans.
For weapons I'll probably pack light unless there's a constant threat. I'll use my 9mm handgun (self defense) and my 22lr handgun (small game and plinking stop signs). I'll stash my ar15, 308 and my 12 gauge somewhere if I need them. I don't want to carry that shit around all the time though if I am B&E. I want to be able to climb, crawl, jump and run without a big metal stick getting in the way. Melee weapon is a crowbar 🙂

so tiresome to see you 2021+ newbies fricking flooding the game 2000-3000 players and now it’s fricking 60k peak with 30-40k daily
You never even played b40, you wouldn’t get to enjoy crowbar being one handed, instant jawstab butter knife sprees, being able to survive cdda without starving or tripping.

so please if you only played the game in b41 and are ESL then frick off.

Now we’re on the path of getting fake and gay “NPCs” which are just simple animal AI.. THANKS TO YOU.

My house is already secure at the rear with a brick wall, I'd just need to secure the front side, my balcony is a good vantage point for keeping watch, I'd maybe have enough resources to last a month before shit gets dire and I'd need to head out. The problem is that I'd need at least one person defending the home from squatters while I go out to gather resources. If I lose my home, I lose my only territory in this now-anarchy filled world and its all over.

Being in Australia I doubt my neighbours are armed or very dangerous, the biggest challenge would be securing fresh water and food.

Either way, with a .22, a 12 gauge, and an old Mauser I should be pretty well set for the basics.

I dunno, without public services there would likely be bushfires that spread out of control even in suburban areas. That shit would very quickly turn people against one another as they try to find refuge, food, and water.

Correct. Which is why I'm armed but most of my shit already buried, cached and squared away.
          Gun safe only has 1 SxS, 1 .308 and 1 .22
Even my ammo has been cached and buried with other supplies in various national parks
Maximum penalty in my state for failure to surrender is 2 years. With a clean record etc I doubt I'd ever see the inside of a jail cell.

So the biggest problem I have is water. While I don’t consider myself a prepped a lot of the hobbies my wife and I got into really lend themselves to it…. We garden a lot and in a crash situation I think we’d stand a reasonable chance at amping it up to enough to live off of instead of just for fun…. We got into canning and have the tools to do so along with a lot of practice… in all honesty this is my backup plan if a freezer dies… can all my meat before it spoils…. I shoot pretty regularly and while I don’t have the gear to fend off an army, I’ve got a couple of pistols, revolvers, a shotgun and a 22 rifle along with about 5k rounds of 22 and about 2k total of the rest mixed together…. If I can figure out the water supply (live in northern arizona) then we really have pretty much all we need to bunker down and ride it out… also have solar panels on the house so we’d likely have some electricity…. If we went to emergency rations I think we reasonably could stretch what we have for about 3-4 months amoung me, my wife and 3 kids… they would not be fun months… but we wouldn’t starve to death…. Also I have a neighbor who is somewhat of a prepper who I’m sure would happily team up with us and my wife’s a nurse practitioner so we’re better off than average in the medical department….

Just a couple Glock 9mm pistols. Two will basically last forever. I can conceal them, I can carry them on foot many miles every day without fatigue, I can defend myself with them, I can find ammo for them anywhere and carry a large quantity of it, I can hunt with them more effectively than with a modern compound bow, and I could even drive off a small raider force in a close range environment like a forest. I don't need anything else and I wouldn't carry anything heavier without an automobile.

I feel like in a zombie apocalypse a sledgehammer would be the best weapon you could have. It wouldn't get stuck and even if you missed the head it would be enough pressure to knock a zombie to the ground easy, I can't think of a better melee weapon besides maybe a metal baseball bat but even that would probably bend over time

The current AR-15 and Glock meta will not change in the zombie apocalypse. Available ammo, available parts, effective, durable.
Castles won out in history. People need safety, rest, food, sightlines, etc. None of that changes, just the fortification designs to account for morons with the world's last tub of tannerite.

Secure the local oil depot, hire guys as guards using sale of fuel.
Use the primary currency of fuel and food to expand control, establishing a monopoly violence with obedience from the population due to the unstated rule that we provide them with security, but demand 40% of all the food and resources they scavange or produce.
Once the population we control gets over a few thousand, the volume of wealth and resources generated from those taxes will be unimaginable allowing us to build hospitals, schools, railways, this provision will reduce the amount of guards we need for local population because they will become complacent and dependants. Then the taxes can be used to form an offensive and formalised military to take over new territory , rinse repeat
