Elkins, WV

There is some weird shit going down in this small middle of nowhere town, like Greenbriar level shit.
Weird job offers here from defense contractors for comsec, electricians, hf radio techs, and all sorts of technical staff.
Not to mention an airport big enough to land a C-5 Galaxy on, why the frick does a town that small have an airport that big?

this is a realistic ~2 years in tech after being a basic b***h desk monkey with light exposure to the networking and infrastructure teams. Most entry level jobs have more requirements buzzwords than this, so it is pretty grounded.

      Also top secret clearance.

I should get top secret clearance.

How does one get TS clearance? I mean beyond already working for a defense contractor/glowops and having your employer file for one.

Get selected for a job that requires you to have TS clearance. There's really no other way.

You are given if you need it. If you don't have your foot in the door in some way you will not get it. It's usually easier for people to get clearance in the military and then keep it updated in civilian life by applying to jobs that require it. Difficult to get as a civ unless you have niche skills that are needed onsite in a secure military facility and there is no one else available that has clearance already.

Anon, if you only meet 75% of any tech job listing you find online you're vastly overqualified compared to who they will inevitably hire because no one fits their criteria.

huh, the default google earth imageset is from 2013.....
Electricians are pretty easy to figure out based off the number of windmills built in the nearby mountains, technical staff as well not sure if the radio techs would be involved with that as well but even then i've got no idea on the comsec stuff

Are drugs really that big of a problem in that part of the country? Are there just a bunch of fat white dudes from Appalachia selling oxycodones and fent to people?

              > Are there just a bunch of fat white dudes from Appalachia selling oxycodones and fent to people?
              No.
Well, yes. But they’re doctors. Your stereotypical drug pushers aren’t really a thing in the super rural areas. Most of the drug abuse is prescription drugs. And alcohol of course.

                Anonymous

That might have been true many years ago when documentaries like Oxyana came out, but regulators like the FDA have aggressively cracked down on prescriptions for Oxys.
The vast majority of Appalachian drugs indeed come from your run-of-the-mill redneck drug dealers living in the mountains.

We also both alluded / cited the exact same timeline (circa 2013, when Oxyana came out) when regulators cracked down on doctor's prescribing Oxys, etc.
So now its just white people living in the moutains slinging pressed pills that originally come from cartels ofc.

Nah. I don’t really care that much. And I’m not saying you are wrong, but there are still doctors over-prescribing.

Doctor pill mills haven’t been a thing since like 2013. Doctors shit their pants over prescribing opiates now. The current epidemic is from cartels selling to local gangs who then sell to junkies. You cannot find a genuine Percocet 10 on the black market

WV didn't get the memo until 2018 with the Opioid Reduction Act (SB 273). There was a serious issue with doctors(nurses could even sign off on prescriptions making the issue worse) abusing the system.
By that point everyone was getting hooked on heroin and the fent, though.
There's a saying in Mingo county, if you rattle a pill bottle they will come. I haven't lived there in awhile and I heard it's chilled out a bit because either everyone overdosed and died or left state when the drugs started drying up.
I was an EMT from Cabell county who got his fair share of OD calls.

Runway is only 4500 feet. You need 4900 to land a C-5 loaded. You also cant take off at all.

Not to mention a listed weight capacity of 56000 pounds.
You can’t even land a C-130 on it.

Huh. didnt know that was a thing.

I figured it was just a training airport. We have one down here, it does have a long runway too (for obv reasons)

          Anonymous

4500 feet is not a long runway. It’s especially not a long runway in the mountains. I’d say it’s on the bigger side of “short” actually.

            Anonymous

ya 4500 feet is pretty normal for a county level airport, all 3 counties in the metro i live in have airports that size for local use in addition to the actual Metro airport that actually has service to it. There's also 2 smaller 3.5k foot airports,

looked into it. it's no where near as big a deal as you make it out to be. the airport has little to nothing to do with and there's info available about the place in the news paper from a year ago.

you really want something to freak out over? go look into sugar Grove. few years back it was auctioned off and was supposed to become a woman's prison. no woman over there and it's still got armed guards around the place.

also check out etam some rich person idk who baugh it and was renovating the place for something. but it used to be an NSA site spying on the commies via moon bounce.

Where does it say that? I read that it was an nsa station and in '17 one of (or perhaps all) of the facilities was sold to an investment group with plans to convert it into a health care facility. At any rate, armed guards would be pretty reasonable for an nsa or naval operations facility
