What are everyone's thoughts on red dots on EDC pistols?
Given enough "trigger time", do you feel that they present an advantage over irons, or is it just more shit to break/worry about and spend money on?

They make you both faster and more precise, and you don't really need a TON of reps with them to see the benefits. Do 50 holstered draws a day for a month and you'll be good to go. Honestly, red dots on pistols are the only fricking advancement in handguns worth a shit over the past thirty years.
There's about a 99.99% chance that you won't ever shoot anyone with your EDC. If you do, there's about a 99.99% chance that they will be less than 10 feet away. If you need a red dot to shoot something 10 feet away, you shouldn't be carrying a gun.
But what if an autist starts shooting up a food court, dawg?
Pretty much. Also I get the impression people who rave about them haven't considered the fact that drawing in a defensive situation and finding the red dot isn't the same when you're at the range and know well before hand you're going to be shooting and the moments before know exactly you'll need to be looking for the red dot.
In a defensive situation you're going to be minding your own business and
OH SHIT NEED TO SHOOT THIS Black person!!!
Why are you at a mall?
>red dots on EDC pistols?
>gets disabled by the smallest bit of pocket lint covering the emitter
nothin' personnel
>What is cowitnessing
How is it having this little intelligence
>buying a red dot just so you can plan on using iron sights
How is it having this little intelligence
Too poor for a closed emitter?
post your guns with red dots, teenaged r*dditors
You're the dork who forgot which way gravity goes. You first.
as expected, kids
Hey im not one of the dudes who you are sparring with. I carry a gen 1 shield and I wish I could be able to carry with a red dot
My philosophy is to have two of each gun, one 100% stock and the other with fancy upgrades. I only own two glock 19s and two DD in the above configuration.
Stop asking people to post their guns, it is Rick measuring or glowing.
A poor-homosexual and a glow-Black person!
I don't know how in the hell you've manage to carry your pistol upside down in a holster this long, but if you'll start carrying it right side up, that won't happen anymore.
It's easy to train for, but do you want the extra weight and possible failure point on a gun that will be treated worse than any other in your collection?
I have an RMR, I don't use it on my edc.
do you plan on getting into gunfights with your ccw at distances where you would actually gain a significant advantage from a dot over irons/point shooting?
I don't. I value the simplicity of irons and less bulk/snag points for ccw
>planning on getting in a gunfight
>"point shooting"
You're a fricking homosexual.
>basketball american approaches and attempts to help himself to my belongings
>point gun at him
>shoot
For those of you EDC'ing with a red dot, how do you combat washout in the sun?
I live in AZ and all of my red dot equipped pistols washout substantially in full sun, regardless of mode or reasonable intensity.
For a stage directly beneath the sun, just tape over the window with electrical tape and shoot both eyes open. You'll be off a bit with an occluded sight, but you don't need the window to hit.
For EDC, keep your window as clean as you can. I haven't had my dot wash out unusable yet, but that's what the irons are for. Just make sure your glass isn't covered in so much grossness that glare prevents you from looking through it.
>pay hundreds of dollars to shoot your CC occluded instead of just using irons
This is a new low for the moronation I've seen on here.
Well you aren't carrying occulded, fellow moron. And also, like I said, I haven't had a dot wash out on me in the dusk.
do it if you like shooting with it at the range since that will be the only place you actually use that pistol
why?
Cons:
> Presentation is more difficult, because you don't have a frick huge FSP to guide you on the way up
> Most people drill their fast presentation, but fewer work one handed or from the ground, and the timer won't lie
> Dot's still fail, and it will piss you the frick off. Usually it's batteries, but I've also killed two "duty ready" models under 10k rounds. Sure, FSPs come unscrewed too, but I haven't had it happen twice.
Pros
> Easy loud feedback of problems with trigger press, grip on draw, and especially master grip issues under recoil, if you know what to look for
> No easier way to call shots. It's a collimated gun sight. If your sight is zeroed, and your dot is inside an acceptable target when the gun goes off, your shot will be too.
> It was LARPing, but frick a 3 plane sighting solution when I'm trying to process door #1, a window, avoiding obstacles, and then trying to shoot or not shoot a stupid fricking swinging target that randomly flips between an unarmed/armed man, all on the move.
This is where I'm at now. In 10 years I'll probably be back on irons just to be a contrarian dick.
There is absolutely zero evidence that a red dot sight alone will give you any meaningful advantage within the context of realistic private citizen self defense shootings. If you want to carry one or you like it due to bad eyesight, then be my guest to carry one. But I don't care to jump on the current bandwagon and get my pistol milled for the optic, buy the optic, and shoot enough ammo to adjust to the optic just to be part of the hip kids carry club.
>and shoot enough ammo to adjust to the optic
do you not shoot your gun?
Since you missed it, the point was that's a whole lot of bullshit to go through for a whole lot of nothing. Shooting an extra 200-400 rounds to learn the dot being the most minimal amount of bullshit in that list. Also, I forgot about needing to buy or modify your existing holster to fit the red dot on your gun.
>OH NOOO A DREMEL OR A HEAT GUN AAAHHHHH!!!
>There is absolutely zero evidence that a red dot sight alone will give you any meaningful advantage within the context of realistic private citizen self defense shootings
My Bill drill and double taps on three targets (any range) is faster and more reliably accurate (more a-zone hits) from concealment using an RDS pistol than an irons equipped pistol. What more evidence do you need? All of my times from the holster (excluding 3 yards and in which are the same) are faster and more accurate with a dot than irons. I can hit headshot easier, hostage targets are easier, 10y and out is easier... Everything is easier with a dot except point shooting distances where it's equivalent to irons. What the frick do you mean by "no evidence?" Do you need the FBI to conduct experiments for you? Fricking dweeb. Actually go outside and participate in the hobby.
This might surprise you, but some guy referencing his own experience as fact doesn't really convince anyone here. You could be, and probably are, a 13 year-old kid just talking shit. If you're legit, then you can understand why I can't take anything you said seriously. Here's a video of a well known, top tier shooter comparing irons vs red dots. You can take from this what you want, but the truth remains that there is no factual evidence that a red dot gives any noticeable advantage vs iron sights on a carry gun within the realm of realistic self defense situations.
>Youre experience? No, it must be approved by some E-celeb who forms my opinions for me!
Just go fricking shoot one and make up your own mind Jesus Christ
appendix carry is for wanna-be-eunuchs
Have you tried wedges to shift the POI away from your junk?
my thoughts are everyone likes to talk about equipment like shoes in their closet, but very few like to shoot and actually develop shooting skills.
so the average person's opinion on pistol dots is unimportant.
here's some typical match footage, if you are not conditioning yourself for match like pressure you are ignoring one of the largest contributing factors to your on demand shooting.
