    here's the thing
companies want young EXPERIENCE apprentice not inexperienced ones. They don't want to train people with zero experience since it they're not efficient enough resulting a worker shortage even though they're endless supply of young people who want to get into trade

Uh, huh. Most zoomers quit, the moment they find out that they have to DO WORK and won't get paid $60K starting salary.

No matter where, you likely won't make an impact at work beyond either subtly improving the lives of your coworkers by being helpful and friendly in addition to being good at the job, or by being so bad at your job you dig a hole that will take years to climb out of.

      > join the trades bro it’s $60k starting bro!!!

Nah ima be real with the zoomers, if you join a trade you’re looking at being an apprentice for 5 years, it doesn’t matter if you went to trade school…

The pay is minimum wage, however you also have to buy tools.

Google snap-on screwdriver set, google fluke multi-meter, google mitutoyo calipers

You’re buying a truck full of those tools on a minimum wage salary

And no you don’t have 5 years to get it, you have to have al that before your first month of employment

Lastly , yes you will earn 60k a year once you’re no longer an apprentice… however… that’s only if you work 60 hours a week, yes it’s $60k a year but with Monday’s off

                Sieg

Yes it’s not the old days anymore.

If you want the machine to cut down a center like you don’t have to trig it out and offset for cutter radius

You just click the line, then click generate tool path, then copy paste the information of the tool from the catalog and then hit post.

Then it autogenerates the tool path with the correct offset and the depth and then you take the gcode and modify it very slightly maybe 10 lines max

Then put it in the machine controller and you’re done.

Best thing is other tradesmen thing you’re a wizard because you make the shit they install (but it’s all computers)

Machinists will be replaced by AI soon

maybe he does, but I have noticed that what companies need is jacks of all trades versus masters of one. If you want to solidly become a one trade man its going to come from new build construction.

          Anonymous

I think it's good to have one trade that you're really skilled at but also have a bit of knowledge of all the other trades too. The boomer who taught me my trade didn't know anything other than how to lay bricks and i thought it was weird.

            Anonymous

that is how all of the boomers are. that is also probably why the trades have such bad problems attracting new blood as its not clear how you grow your income if all you are is a one trade man.

yea trades are garbage unless you are an idiot or can't stand school
Boomers grew up in a different era, and worked in an era where it paid decent money
Now costs went up 5x and the pay is the same

That's the other side of the coin. A lot of zoomies are going into trades hearing that it's a legitimate choice of career, but they try to apply to a company with literally zero experience, limp wristed hammer strikes style of experience, has to say "lefty loosey righty tighty" out loud to remember what way to turn a screw. Lie a little and say you've helped your dad build an addition and renovated your retired aunt's cottage.

My advice is just tell them you were a machine operator on fadal machines.

Tell them you can’t set up all you did was load a part and press the green button after someone set it up for you.

No real shop has a fadal anymore and they’ll be like yes some experience

Then when they pair you up with your trainer tell them you have 0 experience since it will be weeks since the i tail job offer and the guy training you never saw your resjme

      >A lot of zoomies are going into trades
Where? I don't know a single zoomer who has gone into construction. I've heard them talk about it, most say shit like 'i think i wanna be a welder so i can be an underwater welder' LOL

Also i'm actually around a lot of young male zoomers because i'm a skateboarder who goes to the skatepark regularly

        Anonymous

zoomers aren't going to go in and even if they did its going to be a long 10+ years to make money. You will likely change companies multiple times and may even change trades a few times.

Why would you go into the trades when being a truck driver or working at some place like Ford pays literally twice as well

          Anonymous

You've piqued my interest anon. What should I keep in mind as a truck driver, that is fundamentally different to driving a regular car?
Obviously crashes are more catastrophic and I have to avoid going under bridges, but hopefully GoogleMaps takes care of that.
What is a newbie likely to overlook?

Every time i find a young person to work with me (i'm a self employed mason) they are late to work, on their phone way too often and they'll make up random excuses to leave halfway during the day. I'm legitimately very nice to kids who know nothing and i actually try teach them shit without making them feel stupid (basic stuff like tying a string line or reading a tape measure or that kind of thing). I never yell at them like my boomer bosses did to me when i was learning yet they still have 0 motivation to work. It's pretty infuriating.

i see a bunch of back and forth and b***hing here, but no one has asked the real question yet:

if zoomers don't go into trades, who will do them?

of course zoomers are going to do trades. every generation goes into trades, because we always need them. eventually market pressures will kick in and trades will become more profitable as younger people refuse to go in.

yes, companies are inflexible bastards right now, anyone who's done a trade before knows these companies are inflexible bastards 24/7. the difference is when they need something. right now, they jave the boomers and knowledgeable people. soon, they won't, and it will be a brief period of utter bedlam to get young people to join in. a handful of boomers will also get their final golden parachute as they will be asked to stay on late and train young people to take up the torch.

      >who will do them
zoomers from the third world obviously.
how many millennials do you know in trades? I can count on one hand the people i know who went into it (in california). The rest are all immigrants.

if you are over 20 years old and trying to get into the trades, everyone knows youre a moron who couldnt cut it at white collar work or a total loser whos never worked a real job in his life, AKA a total waste of time who shouldnt be hired

the average start for an apprenticeship is 26 to 28 you moron

and look at the majority of apprentices. they all vape, b***h and moan, sit on their phones all day, and do absolutely no work. i always ask an apprentice "if you worked all day, and everything you did was wrong, and i had to go back and redo everything you did, did you work? and if you didnt work, did you deserve to get paid for the day?"
it always pisses em off, but they cant refute it. i run apprentices, and honestly, 95% of them arent cut out for the trades. if someone was truly motivated to have a career in a trade, they would start young. all these "late bloomers" arent worth shit

its not illegal to withhold pay for not working. would you pay $300 of your hard earned money a day for a guy who gets nothing done? since this is the internet, im sure youre some altruistic saint who thinks everyone deserves to have everything handed to them on a silver platter, but in the real world it doesnt work that way. i try to train these idiots so they get the skills to be independent and encourage them to go to school to get certified so they can go out on their own one day and make their own money, but half the time they cant even find the motivation to get to work on time. how fricking hard is it to show up at 7am?
            >uh duh boss i hit traffic

                >its not illegal to withhold pay for not working
if they clocked in or showed up then yes it's illegal to not to pay them. Like the other anon said, fricking fired them you moron

if i fired every moronic apprentice ive ever had the displeasure of working with, id have 1 worker every 5 years or thereabout. not a sustainable business model. gotta give the guys the tasks that are so rudimentary that theyre literally impossible to frick up. but then they all complain about their pay grade too which is another issue.

zoomers are pretty much brainwashed into going to college. can't blame them for figuring out later in life that there's more to a career than sitting in an office. Just because you found trade early in life doesn't make you any special
