Why does no one really make duckbill chokes anymore? On other gun forums I've seen mention of "liability" issues but I don't get what would be inherently unsafe about a duckbill

Whats the purpose of a duckbill choke?
Speads shot horizontally but not vertically. Supposedly mostly a meme but they first saw use by SF units in Vietnam.
It seems to me that choke would get mad damaged after a while
Yeah but that doesn't really matter anon, you just screw on a new one
>I don't get what would be inherently unsafe about a duckbill
I have read that many Duckbill chokes would develop a crack after repeated firing. That could certainly be a liability concern for whomever made the chokes, the last thing they want is for a piece of it to end up in some dude's head.
I've never seen a screw-in duckbill choke, they're typically welded or silver soldered directly to the barrel. You could make a screw-in one, though it would be more fragile, and you'd also have to figure out some way to clock it.
These were not a over the counter type of thing like the china lake, also people were a lot less Sue crazy back then
>soft lead damages hard steel
>soft water damages hard rock
Yes. You can see photographic evidence of it here:
The shot hitting the choke acts like a wedge trying to drive the two halves apart, and since it's an ounce or more of lead traveling at supersonic speeds when it hits the choke it's hitting it pretty fricking hard. Sometimes the duckbill choke had a reinforcing ring around the end to try and combat this problem, like picrel. But that doesn't really work either. Look carefully at the cracked one in the above photo and you can see the groove near the muzzle end where a ring would have been, so the ring failed too.
Profitability.
because it's moronic
imagine if someone get's it squished so the bullets dont fit thru anymore haha
Not sure how you'd do that short of crushing it in a vice or maybe wailing on it with a hammer
i was thinking if a car or apc drove over it
that's machined from solid steel stock annon, your going to need a steam roller to do that kind of damage
Where can you buys these? Is it really a benefit over a circle pattern?
That's just it, you really can't, at least not through a normal web store that will just ship it to your home
the benefit is that if you aim it at chest level all of the pattern goes to chest level. none of it gets lost into the ground or the sky. in theory this means you can hit 3 guys standing side by side but that sounds like a meme to me
More like it turns a near miss into a hit, but we aren't firing blindly into the jungle these days
>What we found was that the device works best with #4 shot, with marginal effectiveness using #1 and no effect with #00. We saw a shot pattern of rough 3:1 width to height, with the height being approximately equal to the diameter of a plain cylinder bore gun used as a control. At 25 yards, this resulted in a pattern more than 3 feet wide, hitting multiple side-by-side silhouettes.
They're still used in the Battlefield games at least
>t. 0.3 k/d
Literally me
Do they actually work? I swear I’ve seen videos showing that the spread is basically the same with a duckbill
Not really.
They do make a wider but not taller shot pattern. So does flattening the muzzle of a shotgun barrel a smidge. As to how effective a horizontal pattern was vs a round pattern in combat, no idea. I can see it being potentially useful in really tight jungle against banzai attacks, but the VC and NVA weren't the Japs on Guadalcanal.
What if you sharpened these and used them as a bayonette
>On other gun forums I've seen mention of "liability" issues
That's pretty simple to understand, anon.
>Make special choke that's only safe to shoot with birdshot
>moron doesn't understand how it works or what it's for. He just thinks it's cool because of a Youtube video. He doesn't read the manual either, and decides to shoot slugs through it.
>Slug busts the choke open and hurts people
>Lawyers.exe
Ive read the bills break or get deformed and dont last very long, so liability is a thing! They would be ideal in a trench battle
>I want one if you know anyone making them!
I remember these in jagged alliance 2
