I want to build a small personal campsite and want to build an outhouse there but a 300gal septic tank is hella expensive and I can get an ibc for free and buy like $300 in concrete bags to surround it.

Why not just dig a hole, shit in hole, cover with dirt and make new hole when it’s full. Why build a concrete hole that is full of shit?

because that will smell like fricking mega black death shit after 3 seconds and it is fricking moronic.
My intent is to build a rectangular building which will have a toilet room on one side that goes into the septic tank, and a shower on the other side which just goes into the leach field or has its own or something. Like i want to build it all properly except the tank itself seems like a massive ripoff, like it costs as much as the building materials for the entire building

You should have said that to begin with, but I guess I shouldn't have assumed either. People use IBC totes as septic tanks fairly often without concrete. I would imagine that it would hold up to concrete being poured around it as long as the hole is fairly tight, which you'd want anyway so you're not spending a fortune and mixing concrete all day.

          >People use IBC totes as septic tanks fairly often without concrete
          do they?
I figured they would at least get btfo on top where the pocket of air is. I wasnt going to admit it but i intended only on capping the top with concrete, since the rest of it is just filled with water before its buried like normal.
I guess it doesnt need to be very deep since I dont care about building codes, just enough to keep the smell away and people from falling in it

I guess I'm not following why you need to cap it. Are you not planning on venting it at all?

its my understanding from fricking with septic tanks twice in my life that they have air in them past the base of the leach field outlet, which is nfg for such a thin top on the IBC i'm thinking.
I've never seen a vented septic tank before.

Just dig a pit latrine. You cannot possibly shit enough to fill one. Put outhouse over pit latrine, run pipe from toilet if you use one beneath outhouse.

my other idea was a vault toilet but they get so fricking rank inside, that I'd rather not

the vent is normally in the house it's attached to...in your case, the vent seems to be whatever your "toilet" is going to be

Do not create a septic tank without a perk test or approval from a Designated Health Rep. Also out can make a shit house without issues, but if you want to install your own septic tank get someone to write you up a design and get it stamped and approved. Waste disposal shouldn't be DIY

there's no reason to fill around this thing with concrete at all. Cut the top off, punch some holes in the sides, then flip it upside down and place it in a hole. Pipe your toilet to run into what was formerly the metal bottom of the tank through a hole. They work great, and if it's just a single toilet with its minimal water usage, then this will last for several years and is very acceptable in most soil situations. (this is obviously a no go if it's on the side of a steep hill, in fractured stone soil, in a site with the water table 3 feet down, etc)

its in the base of a canyon so the water level in some winters will be very high, and I have my doubts that will work as the ground will just crush it, caving in the thing and causing a stink hole under the structure.

the dirt here is almost like decomposed sandstone mixed with small amounts of soil. shit is hard and doesnt dig well. but whe it rains its not like there is puddles everywhere, so it does absorb water

There's more to a septic tank than just a container that you shit in. If you want an actual septic tank then you should read up on how they work. If you want a tub that will hold 300 gallons of shit, your idea will work. Like the other guy said though, if you're going with your plan then why even bother with the IBC tote in the first place? Just dig a hole and shit in it.

Also what do you plan to do when your IBC tote fills up?

It's completely possible to diy a decent septic system, but unless you're going to spend the time it takes to learn how septic systems work and install a functional homemade version you might as well just have an outhouse. You won't have to move it very often if it's just you, anyway.

Yes if that is an HDPE one it will survive just fine. If you can get the concrete to mix into the metal cage it’s like ghetto reinforced concrete and should last almost forever

a single chamber septic tank is absolutely a container that you shit in. they are nothing more than a container, an inlet, and a leach field outlet.

they never really fill up because the bugs or whatever that live in a septic tank eat all the shit and condense it down significantly smaller over time. at the rate I'd use it, it would last 500-700 years.

        >bugs or whatever that live in a septic tank eat all the shit and condense it down significantly smaller over time.

Thats not true. It would be true if the shitter had access to fresh air - oxygen, than - maybe.
Instead of oxygen the air above the shit is poisonous gas. I remember several cases where someone fell into one, and died, so did people who tried to save him.

I have a 3 cubic meter septic tank in my village home, when I leave it in the autumn and come back in the spring, the shit level never changes.

oxygen is introduced into the water as its flushed in.
actually now that you mention this I think the bugs thing only works if it is used often enough, like daily, so there is a constant ish supply of oxygen coming in the water.
either way its a moot point, because i will be using it at most what 150 shits a year, but likely just 50. since I wont stay out there every weekend, and it wont be often ill have a bunch of mates out.

Why surround it with concrete though? Just bury it with the dirt from digging the whole. A friend of mine built a transportable about ten years ago and for the septic we dug a pit that fit two IBCs and made up some rough flanges to join them with a short length of ~150mm PVC pipe somewhere near the top and then did something similar for an outlet into a french drain. Filled it all in, worked great. Did the whole job in a day with a .9 tonne digger he hired in incredibly hard clay, so it's very doable. I don't see what the concrete going to do for you though.

      Anonymous

Having now actually read some of the thread I see what you're getting at with the concrete, but along the lines of what others have said: I'd be far more inclined to spend the money and time you were going to put into concrete on making an actually functioning septic system which really shouldn't have any pressure in it unless you're also trying to create some sort of bio-digestor? As far as strength goes, if you're that worried about it maybe throw some sleepers or form ply or some shit over the top before you bury it and just don't park anything seriously heavy on it. I wouldn't be keen to park a car on a normal septic in any case. Do some reading and god speed anon, this shit is very doable if you have even half a brain and some hand skills.

Dig hole, Shit, cover shit with cedar chips, shit, cover, shit until full. cover with dirt, move outhouse.
If you bury a tank, like you describe, the honey truck wont pump it and you'll be stuck with a plastic fanatic fricking full of shit mess.

Buy the tank and have it pumped, or bury your shit in a old school outhouse.

Your county will also probably only allow the proper tank and a pump schedule. So unless you want a plastic fantastic full of shit fricking mess, a fine and the EPA sniffing around (pun intended) do it the correct way.

    ONLY EXPERIENCED POSTERS SHOULD APPLY!!!

No. The empty IBC container will try to pop to the surface when the ground floods. The plastic wall will collapse in on itself rupture and leak shit everywhere.

I'd say its a better idea to build a portajohn on stilts and put the IBC container under it then hope you can retrofit it and find a honey sucker that will hook up to your shit tank. But thats expensive and I assume the honey sucker wouldnt readily hook up.

The superior Idea is to spend a month just steady grinding learning about latrines and compost toilets.

Piss is just free fertilizer and sterile. The shit is the hard part. For instance a baby can get a polio vaccine, shit in a cloth diaper and through the washing machine waste stream can cause a vaccine derived polio outbreak.

Otherwise shit decomposes into sterile earth. I Dig a hole. Fill it with 5 gallons of dog shit and in about 6 months to a year I relocate it and what comes out I could sell to you as chocolate loam high quality soil and you would never realize you bought my dogs shit.

the whole concept of the septic tank is to release the liquids to the soil column above the saturated zone to allow microbes to digest the wastes and neutralize it before getting the groundwater, and for the tank with solids to act as a digester to treat the solids. If you are going to build something like a septic tank system then at least run a few tests and design it properly otherwise the container will be a large biological waste hazard. Someone already makes an outhouse to convert your waste into fertilizer, so that would probably be a less expensive and better route.
