dishwasher rust

Dishwasher rack rust

Posting to get some ideas on how to fix a rust spot on my dishwasher rack. Eventually it will rust thru and I won't be able to put a plate in the spot. And it is staining my dishes.

Not sure what will hold up to water, soap and hot temperatures.
Maybe some kind of silicone or rubber.

Those are dipped in some kind of vinyl coating. Get all the rust away then get yourself some tool dip. It's meant to coat the handles of pliers etc with a durable finish. Maybe other anons have other suggestions; that's the first one that popped into my head to try.

Conversely, if you don't remove the rust, it will keep eating at the underside of the material and grow worse. I wonder what condition the sacrificial anode is in your hot water heater, if your tray is getting eaten that bad.

This. I neglected my sacrificial anode in my hot water heater and my hair fell out.

you need to replace the rack, it will continue to rush and eventually start breaking apart. but if your dishwasher is old enough to rust, the whole thing probably should be replaced

rusty dishwasher rack has nothing to do with the anode rod in his water heater, wtf are you smoking? the racks get rusty purely from age, as the plastic coating breaks and water gets in direct contact with the bare metal, along with the harshness of dishwasher detergent

Hey man it's worth a stab. If the anode is protecting the hwh, it may be helping to neutralize the corrosive effects further on down. But, I forgot that north american dishwashers have their own heating element, and only get fed cold water.

Yeah, I'd at the very least replace the rack. But, honestly, new dishwashers are extremely good and efficient.

I've used Uhu-brand porcelain glue and it held up for years.
Wire brush the rusty spots, degrease then apply the glue.

This. I actually tried plasti-dip and it didn’t last that long.
Surprisingly, I did other areas with an oil based primer and it lasted 10+ years. The white plasti-dip turned yellow.

Also thin out the primer with a very light solvent so your first application gets under the vinyl coating.

Probably just order a new rack anon. It can't be more expensive than your time + materials to try to fix it multiple times

Rack costs as much as a new dishwasher.
Plus new dishwasher will probably only last a year.
