According to the official press release from the Colombian authorities, President Petro even precisely extended the duration of his visit to Paris for this meeting which took place this Sunday, June 25, on the sidelines of the Paris Air Show.
>This meeting would have been an opportunity for the French aeronautical group to detail the French offer, ranging from the performance of the device itself to the associated services, as well as a detailed explanation of the costs and offset commitments that would accompany this offer, moreover, actively supported by the French authorities.
>the acquisition of the French fighter would remain in Bogota's intentions, even if it will not take place before 2025 or 2026.

    Impressionnant.

Wis zis most recent achievement, fate has in a single Gauloises puff, marked the decline of le anglo and spelled a new era of wondrous je ne sais quoi and peaceful global dominance for zee big France wiener hon hon, which promises to firmly stand in sharp contrast to zee historically bloody ascent of English cochons and the cruel subjugation it brought to les petites nations of the world. With the blessings of French monocrystal baguettes, plasma cigarette technology, quantum direct-current existentialism, quantum aircraft ejection seats and quantum enhanced street mimes will be the instruments with which France affirms its noble stewardship of XXIst French République world politics and offers the non-anglo world a different option; a humanist alternative to the depredations of anglo leadership and the opportunity for a more equitable and dignified multilateral white flag.

They never stopped considering it. The Rafale won the competition the government just hasnt allocated the funds yet.

Just like how Rafale had won in Brazil, right?

Yeah until SAAB came in and agreed to let Embrear assemble the Gripen and that deal was too sweet to let go.

Wouldn't be surprised if SAAB/Embraer manages to shill better for Colombia. Specially since both Colombian and Brazilian presidents are ideologically aligned.

Doubt it, all of the military leadership in Colombia dislike the Gripen and it was really only considered because they needed at least three options. If the Rafale isn’t picked the choice defaults to the Block 70 F-16 since Colombia is in good favor with the US any they already offered Colombia good financing and weapons packages.

they could do that with garage sale f-16s

          >garage sale F-16

Kek good luck with that. Fresh F-16 is booked until 2030 and countries like romania, pakistan and even ukraine get the first dib on every 2nd/3rd/4th hand F-16 whenever they're available

Because Venezuela has SU-30s and S-300 and the two countries don’t get along very well even though Colombias current president is a lefty the next one sure won’t be and they’ll get right back to wanting to kill each other.

    I thought they're looking for FA-50?

      Anonymous

FA-50 is supposed to replace the older FLIT aircraft and transition the pilots to eventually operate Rafale they're not directly comparable

Had the colOmbian chose Gripen then it would be a legit question as both FA-50 (especially the block 20 variant) is somewhat comparable to Gripen

          >after being denied into F-35 club, RTAF decided that add 3 more Gripen to increase its fleet size to 14 as well as upgrading the entire gripen fleet with new radar
          >also planning to absorb used Croatian Gripen to expand their gripen fleet to 2 squadron worth
          >also add couple more T-50TH as well as upgrading their existing T-50TH into the latest variant, similar to the ones used by Poland and Malaysia
          >planning on selling some of its F-16 to fund the Block 70 upgrade to 36 of its existing F-16

Thailand low key has the second most capable air force both in term of quality and quantity behind Singapore, while Malaysia keeps delaying their fighter jet procurement (FA-50 doesnt count) Indonesia is bumbling their way with expensive and questionable acquisition (used mirages, Rafale, F-15, KF-21, Su-35, used T1 typhoon, etc)

To a Gripen E? Frick no.
The EW on the Gripen E is probably one of the best ones together with the F-35.

          Anonymous

          Nope just regular Gripen C/D

To compete with Gripen E, they first need to put more powerful F414 engine first.

Think in the end they'll get Dane F-16's.
Despite having a left-wing govt, Colombia still pretty much an American colony and their military are huge simps for America.

They aren’t getting the Danish F-16s the government only wants new aircraft. And they would rather have new Gripen Es than 40 year old F-16s that would need to be replaced again in 10 years.

Currently the order goes as follows

              1. Rafale F3R/F4
              2. F-16 Block 70
              3.Gripen E
              4. EF-2000 T3

              All new airframes

(The reason the EF-2000 is last is because of cost)

Colombia discards purchasing Danish F-16s due to high operating costs and low service life.

Isn't the F-16 backlog quite long?

The FA-50 is supposed to replace the retired A-37 Dragonfly’s as the advanced trainer and light attack aircraft. And it doesn’t have anywhere near the performance to compete with actual fighters like the SU-30, F-16, etc. Thats what the Rafale is for

    >used F-16
    >high operating cost
As opposed to getting a 2 engined fighter jet, or worse, 2 engined FRENCH fighter jet? lmao

    >low service life
MLU F-16 basically rezeroes the airframe and the engine to at least 8000 hours which equates to 20 years which is extendable to another 4000 hours. For something like 20 mils a pop you got yourself something close to Block 70 F-16 that you can use up to 2050.
