Kazakhstan is trying to pry itself away from Russia as fast as possible because they see themselves becoming the next Ukraine (they have a massive Russian """minority""" that is just begging to be astroturfed into thinking they're oppressed).
So the Kazakhs have announced they won't join the war in Ukraine, won't recognize the meme republics, and may try and leave the Russia's economic cooperation organization.
In northern Kazakhstan there are Russian squatters and a large Russian-speaking population. After Ukraine Kazakhstan said frick this shit, i'm next.
How realistic is the goal to distance themselves from Russia for Kazakhstan? Will aligning themselves with China be any better than Russia (I guess they don't have a Chinese majority waiting to be liberated)?
They have large gas reserves and they already orientating themselves to China. Like people ITT already said, the Kazakhs see the writing is on the wall and they don't want to be Ukraine 2.0. Having that said, due to shared history and geography, they'll remain close to Russia, but they seek to create enough space between them and Russia to dissuade any 'special military operation'.

Their goal was to be neutral to get best deal from all sides.
But now they are now mainly aligning themselves with EU, much like Ukraine was.
Over 50% of their import/exports and investments come from EU, Russia and Chine are both at ~10%
With the Russian invasion to Ukraine, it's clear to everyone they will be next unless they totally gutter their economy and go down with Russia.
It's also clear China would be sucking them dry like they are doing in Africa, if not worse
CSTO is not a real thing. None of the members outside of Russia have any real armed forces. Russia just had to fly to Kazakhstan earlier this year to quell a coup since their own government couldn't do it, now Kazakhstan is buddying up to China instead out of appreciation for saving their ass.
CSTO didn't even bother defending Armenia, so whats the point of the alliance again? Seems like a shit alliance if it doesn't actually come and help you when you need it.
>so whats the point of the alliance
It's easy, it's not an alliance, it's Russian influence sphere, like the Warsaw pact, which by the way only ever fought its own members.

Poland and the Baltics would unironically dad dick all of them without the rest of NATO

They also have Russian bases. Baikonur is as crucial to the Russians as Sevastopol was.

They have Uyghurs which are obviously the same as Han Chinese.
They can try to balance things out with Europeans and Turks.

Same as the Warsaw Pact.
Hahaha
they could probably take iceland since iceland doesn't have a military

just the name is so embarrassing, so obvious that NATO lives rent free in their head that they even have to emulate the acronym
Even the emblem is the logo-equivalent of those shitty Russian Polandball comics.
