yes! i am completely self taught. i've been doing it since december of 2021.
i'll provide some links to supplies, how to's and patterns. decent starter hooks and a skein of yarn go for pretty cheap, so it's no real lost to try.
Supplies:
hooks- if you have walmart near you, boye is a decent brand, if not here are some cheaper hooks on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/BCMRUN-Aluminum-Crochet-Knitting-Multicolor/dp/B01FMMVML6
Yarn- for starting out i recommend acrylic, it's inexpensive and easy to take care of. I recommend the brands: Red Heart Super Saver, Big Twist, and Lion Brand. They are available on amazon, Joann's, Hobby Lobby, Walmart, basically anywhere with craft supplies.
Yarn Needles- You can get cheap plastic ones on amazon
https://www.amazon.com/Boye-Plastic-Yarn-Sewing-Needle/dp/B07K7D2RS9
For learning, once you get down the basics of chaining, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, magic ring, increase, and decrease, it should be pretty easy to learn patterns.

Yes, I also taught myself crochet from online video tutorials. I used and recommend the tutorials from PlanetJune, she also has a youtube channel.
I personally prefer Susan Bates hooks over Boye because their hook design seems to snag less often.

I second these yarn brands. I've also found a surprisingly good yarn selection at Michaels.
OP here, I am crocheting a C2C Ladybug pattern for my mom.
I'm going to turn it into a bag by making two.
I'll probably do a baby blue border, if any of you have color suggestions for the border I'm all ears.
I want a bit of a more muted color so it doesn't take away from the ladybug
thanks! if i were to work on it consistently then it would probably only take me a couple days. i haven’t been working on it all that much, so its been like a couple of weeks Lol. it’s pretty simple once you get the hang of the stitch, it’s all repetitive
A plant I crocheted recently for the bathroom, which doesn't get any light.
Cute. I think it would look nice with just a white border. How is C2C crochet? I've never made anything that way.

Been a while since I've knitted anything worth posting. Last thing was a pair of wool/silk legging as a commission that had a Gondola face on the back.
I keep losing stitches somewhere along the way when I try to crochet something and always end up with less stitches than the pattern I'm trying to follow. Is this normal for a beginner? I try to count the stitches but I can't really see them well enough with the yarn I'm using (merino wool). Would a different material like cotton make this easier?
Definitely avoid fluffy/fuzzy yarns as a beginner because they make it difficult to see the stitches you're working into, so you'll skip stitches, have trouble counting stitches, etc. Try cotton, acrylic, or any non-fuzzy yarn and see if you're still having the problem.

do you have tips on starting to sell handmade items? i have wanted to for awhile but don’t really know where to start. like if i should do it on etsy, indepently, price ranges, etc.
Cant speak to having a shop or whatnot. I mainly sell off social media. Make something, post pics and price. Get commission requests. Take payment. Post pictures. Get more requests. Inique and top notch pieces sell quickly if you post good pictures and have some reach inyour following. Some folks start local with farmers markets or artist shows or cons. A lot depends onthe quality of your work.
That cow is adorable.
Quality cow
Bumping wholesome thread
thanks, will keep posting projects on this thread 🙂
isn’t this the same troony from before who whined about crocheting being for “all genders”
sad to see that THIS is the only good thread out of a couple that isn’t a shitpost or stupid debate, lead by a fricking troony
not the troony, just thought the crochet thread was cool baka
Nope.
Is crochet easy to get into if you dont know anyone to help you?

Cute! Baby blue would look good I think. How long does it take you to make something like this?

That's amazing.
once you get the hang of it, it’s not too bad. it’s kind of therapeutic with how repetitive it is.
your plant is cute too 😀
making the backside a light blue, then bordering the front with it, my mama said she thought it would look cute that way
making good progress. used a HDC C2C stitch for it. should be about 16”x16”

Thank you anon. I'll try cotton, I don't really like synthetic materials.

homosexual.

That’s awesome! i haven’t gotten into knitting as much as crocheting. i’ve only made pot holders lol.
lurking thread for future projects. make cute plushies or die.
nice gondola, make a plushie out of it
make a cow plushie. do it now.
BTDT. One of my best sellers.
