Cowboy guns

What do you think of carrying a single action revolver in 2023? Is this still relevant?

  1. 3 weeks ago
    Anonymous

Was it ever relevant? Iirc the most popular Wild West guns were shotguns and rifles that had practical use beyond shooting humans and medium game.
Carrying a Big Iron may mean one of three things:
    1. You're a vicious and a killer, though a youth of 24
    2. You're here to do some business
    3. You have never been assaulted and your gun choice is not based on practical use.

It has to be this one.

      >3. You have never been assaulted and your gun choice is not based on practical use.
Is your point that you should carry a shotgun for self defense?
You don't carry a gun because you want to be assaulted, you carry one because you don't want to be assaulted. Not getting assaulted it the end goal here.

        >Is your point that you should carry a shotgun for self defense?
No, my point is that if you want good result, you should have hardware that fits the task and offers as little downsides as possible.
For example, no one said that you can't shoot an Indian from one mile with a Sharps gun with Iron or aperture sights, but today there are guns better suited for the task.

        >don't carry a gun because you want to be assaulted, you carry one because you don't want to be assaulte
        Nonsense.
If I know that you carry, I would just assault you in the way you don't see me coming. And maybe take the gun with me.
And if I don't, you can surprise me with a sudden double tap as I try to mug you as the harmless prey you seem to be

People carries revolvers in their coats/shirts because most gunfights happened in a spontaneous manner. You'd be fucking dead trying to take out your rifle/shotgun when someone fires from their coat.

I carry a 357 single action when Im out doing chores on the property. Although, when I am going to be working in the barn, I will carry a 22 revolver with 22 quiet shorts to shoot mice. The larp is fun.
Now when I am out and about, I will wear a normal semi auto pistol like a normal person. Im not trying to fan the hammer on some cowpokes robbing my stagecoach. The single action is just fine at home though.

I really like open tops. I am a big fan of my taylors richard mason.
What caliber is yours? Is it taylors or cimarron?

Taylor's (Uberti) 1871 .38spl conversion. I love this gun so much. The open top aesthetic has always appealed to me ever since the Ennio Morricone westerns

I used to have a cimarron open top in 45 colt, but I sold it because I am an idiot. It was the only gun I had in 45 colt. Everything of mine is now 357(38) or 22.
Its a good gun pardner. Treat it well.

incredibly based. do you take the shotgun or rifle around too? can we get some details on that knife and belt rig

The shotgun has been for shooting things for fun. I like ripping both barrels into things. The rifle almost saw some action earlier. Goddamn whistle pig digging holes again. I dont normally carry it around because its a little big and heavy for a yard gun (24 inch octagonal barrel), besides, I have a henry 22 that I can beat up without regret.
The large knife is a cold steel frontier bowie that I use to cut big stuff like a machete. 90 percent of the time I just use the old timer woodsman for general stuff. The belt was handmade by someone at a trade fair and the small holster was made by myself. The black powder holster was made by someone else at the trade fair.
Like I said, larping is a lot of fun.

The overwhelming majority of self defense shootings that do happen involve five shots or less. A cap and ball revolver would be perfectly effective, not to mention hot .45 LC from a SAA. You’re not John Wick and neither is anyone else on this basket weaving forum.

The fuck are you talking about? The point is that the self defense shootings which do happen, which we’ve agreed are extremely rare, involve shooting some urban youth at 10 feet in an alley once or twice and then calling the police. An antiquated, obsolete gun is just as capable of accomplishing this task, as is evidenced by the fact that people used these antiquated, obsolete guns for that exact purpose for decades.

Go watch literally any modern defensive shooting. Shit, go watch the one at the taco shop that happened like a month ago.

                >would this have gone as well if I was larping as Wyatt Earp and tried what he did?

Hint: no. You would have gotten off 1, maybe 2 shots, and probably missed both of them while you tried to fan your hammer.

I’ve seen the taco shop video and many others, drawing at an opportune time seems to be a much more important factor than the weapon being used. If it’s good enough for Alec Baldwin, it’s good enough for every man, woman and child in this country.
