Just buy a 10mm carbine instead because you can shoot both .40 and 10mm and not have to worry about your gun exploding
Because you're asking PrepHole you don't have the skills required. A skilled machinist can convert firearms between calibers.

I mean, if you're wanting a defensive carbine for cheap I'd just get a cheapo AR, but if you just want a rifle that shoots pistol rounds it's not bad
That's probably the problem, I dunno what I'd use it for. I already have a decent enough AR, few larger-caliber rifles, enough pistols until I see something else I definitely need. Could do with a good shotgun, but that's about all I'm missing. It'd most likely be a range toy.
I do want something for defense that won't overpen and frick up my house and possessions that isn't a handgun, but I don't think the carbine would be that much of an improvement. Not sure if I should be looking at a shotgun (maybe with slugs) or something like a levergun. I think I'd trust .44 mag to put someone down if it's something with a full length barrel, but I dunno if that would also overpen. Is there any middle ground or should I just accept that if I want to reliably and quickly stop an intruder, I might have to put a round through something of mine?

slugs are by far the most likely load to over pen.
Although really overpen is a moot point, because anything that's deadly to a human is gonna go through multiple sheets of drywall before becoming less lethal (even 5.56, despite what the hardline fanboys say).
And basically any expanding/deforming projectile (or buckshot) will have very little energy left after passing through a human, barring wacky shit (for HD) like .300 Win mag or something.

Didn't look like they added weight to the bolt or changed the mags, just probably needs a stronger recoil spring.
Yeh bro I did my Keltec with a screwdriver and a file. You gotta hog out some chamber but it goes in fine after that.
You don't need to figure out how to the mags just use same ones if you file down the lips. Holds less but bigger bang each they do fine.
