No time to explain, but I need to learn CNC ASAP
It's very important and urgent.

Rec me books, vids, and any other tools to learn as much as possible before the end of the year. No time to explain.

You lied on your resume, didn't you? good luck OP, the only thing that teaches you CNC is experience.

Technically I haven't actually applied yet, so there is no lie. That's why now is the perfect time to start learning.

Its easy but can be pretty machine-specific, so find some weird turkish shit to claim that you used to run so people excuse your lack of knowledge, which will be apparent. Thats the extent of my advice, other than check youtube, but i learned from a mentor so no idea what channels are good.

Also you better know how to use both calipers and micrometer, so I would pick up a cheap one of each.

      easy peasy, used those before.

What precisely, in your view, does it mean for one to
      >learn CNC
      ?

hah, that shows how much of a beginner i am. I need to load up on info about CNC so that when it comes time I will know generally what to do and where to look for specific info. I do not have access to any CNC machines at the moment. Machine-specific knowledge will be acquired in-situ, so to speak.

        >access to any CNC machines
so get a cheap 3d printer -- they also run gcode
sit on its console and manually drive the head around with M commands and such
you'll get the basics first and then start observing the more interesting things like rates and backlash and compound movements and most importantly tool crashes

M commands don’t move the head or spindle on cnc machines

That’s a tool change command the bed won’t move on that.

It clearly does the head/spindle. Drop the tripcode, you aren't special.

Convenient that I was describing how to drive a 3d printer isn't it?

It's basically impossible to learn more than the rough theory without being in the shop. idk what you put on your resume, but you'll be sussed out instantly. If you've never used even a manual mill at all this will happen within five minutes, if you have it might be a couple of days. Luckily for you most machines are quite different besides the standard g-code commands.

      >idk what you put on your resume
nothing yet. that's why i'm devoting my time to learning as much as i can without actually having access to hardware. I learn about g-codes and then I'll tell them I've learned about g-codes.

you're not going to be able to learn it off youtube and Titans of CNC is going to be a 20 minute video of them machining a block of aluminum on a $500k machine while he rambles through an anecdotal story about how he overcame hardship and completed a job without any real details. I'm stumbling through coding at work now and it's a giant handicap not having machining experience. This is after 2x week long classes and I've got another one scheduled. I'm always the only one in class that didn't start on the shop floor (i'm an engineer) and we do weird non-production-rate machining.

I’m about 5 years into cnc machining and programming, a college graduate and I don’t know shit.

I can make some stuff but not everything in the goddamn world, I don’t know how to draw up and make a jet engine with out looking at prints and an assembly guide

Just google one specific machine and tell them that’s the one you tan they’ll teach you the rest

Plot twist: that's the machine they have in the shop.

Tell them you ran a 90s fadal , fricking nobody is running that shit.

If you tell them you rand a next gen haas vf-4 then yeah you’re going to get fricked and called out.

Buy a Genmistu on Amazon for less than 500$ and get experience on the basics. You're still likely fricked because it doesn't compare to big boy machines (tool wear, probing, coolant, etc) but it's better than nothing.

This is honestly your best bet, you can get a half decent Lil router for $4-600, fake a student account and get fusion360 or some other CAM software for free and just start creating things. I've been hobbyist routing for 4 years and can make some pretty complicated cuts but still feel like I don't know jack shit from shit. I couldn't imagine trying to fake knowing cnc in 3 weeks.

Are there any simulators or emulators for linux? Something to practice writing g-code routines in?

if you write your own you'll develop a good understanding of g-code
