Civilian Submarines

Has anyone tried building a submersible yacht on the scale of a WW2 sub? I'm not talking about something that can take on a Seawolf or hunt boomers, I just mean a diesel-electric boat with a flat deck, optimized for surface running, that can duck underwater to ride out a storm or deal with Somali pirates.

I figure this is a PrepHole question because the closest thing to what I'm thinking of in widespread use is a narco-sub, which gets hunted by the USGC.

There was that inventory dude in Denmark who built one to use as a submersible rape shack.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Kim_Wall
      >The murder of Kim Wall, known in Denmark as Ubådssagen (transl."The submarine case"),[2] took place on 10 August 2017, after Swedish freelance journalist Kim Wall boarded the midget submarine UC3 Nautilus, in Køge Bugt, Denmark, with the intent of interviewing its owner, Danish entrepreneur Peter Madsen.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UC3_Nautilus
      >UC3 Nautilus was a privately built Danish midget submarine. It was built over a three-year period by Peter Madsen and a group of volunteers, and cost approximately US$200,000 to build (1.5 million DKK). The submarine was Madsen's third submarine design.[2]

        https://abcnews.go.com/International/murder-trial-man-accused-killing-journalist-aboard-submarine/story?id=53591204

        >Madsen, 47, is accused of tying up Wall and abusing her before killing her and dismembering her body. He was charged with "sexual relations other than intercourse of a particularly dangerous nature" after her remains were discovered to have stab wounds in and around her genitals.

        >Wall's torso was discovered Aug. 21. Other body parts were found later. Pictures of Wall's body are so graphic, most of them will only be shown to those judging the case, the prosecutor said. Only a picture of her wrist was shown in court to show marks, which the prosecutor said matched straps that were found in the submarine.

        >Madsen has offered shifting explanations as to what happened. According to the prosecutor, he deliberately sunk his submarine after killing Wall.

        >Hours before boarding the submarine with Wall on Aug. 10, Madsen had searched for the words "beheading," "girl" and "agony."

        >A video of a woman having her throat slit had been played on his phone. Videos showing women being tortured and executed also were found on his computer.

          https://www.grunge.com/324822/the-tragic-murder-of-journalist-kim-wall/
          >Almost two weeks after KimWall was first reported missing, a cyclist came across a disturbing sight. According to theBBC, the cyclist found a torso and alerted the local authorities. The date was August 21, and the location wasn't very far from where the submarine sank.

          >Authorities worked fast to confirm that the cyclist had indeed found Wall's torso (via Wired.) This changed things, of course, and in early September, prosecutors upgraded Peter Madsen's charge to manslaughter. It would be another month before divers would be able to find more of Wall's remains at sea, separated and disposed of using plastic bags. Her legs were "tied to pieces of metal," and it became increasingly clear that something rather disturbing had taken place aboard the submarine. Madsen, meanwhile, had been providing inconsistent accounts of what had happened that night.

            >A police official,Jens Moeller Jensen, shared disturbing details when he revealed what they discovered. He said, "We found a bag with Kim Wall's clothing; shirt, skirt, socks and shoes, and also a knife and lead pieces weighing them down. Around noon we found a leg, then another leg, and shortly thereafter we found a head, also in a bag weighted down by several metal pieces."

            >Madsen had at least three versions to offer about the events that took place on the evening of August 10.It must be noted that all of his stories were incredibly hard to believe and didn't add up at all. He first claimed that he had ensured that Wall was safely ashore close to 10:30 PM that evening. He added that he didn't spot her again after that. A local restaurateur refuted this claim and noted that there were plenty of CCTV cameras near where Madsen claimed to have dropped Wall off. Indeed, Wall was never spotted there.

            >Madsen eventually changed his story. He said that there was an unfortunate accident on the submarine and that Wall was killed after she was struck on the head by the vessel's hatch. Then Madsen changed his story again in October, saying that Wall died because of "carbon monoxide poisoning."

            >The prosecutor alleged that there was sexual intent involved and that Madsen had attempted to get other women aboard his sub in the past but hadn't succeeded until Wall joined him.

There's been a few old Whiskey-classes put up for sale, but I don't think any have been returned to service. It's just not something richfags want to do: for the price it would take to buy a diesel boat, overhaul it so it's in modern shape, demilitarize it, and then hire enough former submariners to crew it, they could afford a traditional type of yacht that'd be more impressive to their other richfag contemporaries.

Plus I'm genuinely not sure if any flagstate or the IMO has any kind of regulations for a civilian-owned submarine. You might not be able to actually register it anywhere.

even if they did all of that it would still be cramped as fuck and generally a trash place to hang out. all so you could...spend a lot of time underwater and looking at walls.

i can stay at home and look at walls without spending all that money. what's the fucking point.

That's why it'd have to be a new design. Denser batteries, more compact generator, modern materials, optimized to run either singlehanded or with a small crew, focused on living space rather than torpedo/ammo storage, and a conning tower that can open to reveal a marine Starlink terminal.

Wow sounds like you'd have room to rape and murder at least 2 or 3 women in there!

If I was going to do that I'd just rent a fishing boat and do it in bulk. They already come equipped to wash out decaying animal parts into the sea.

there is not much room in those subs even if you do that. and you're still spending most of your time inside. they're a sub. the conning tower is not designed to be a relaxing outdoor space. they're designed for people to spend most of their time underwater in. what part of this are you not comprehending.

everything that people buy a yacht for? you can't do that in a sub. you're not walking around outside, admiring the view, relaxing in large open spaces in luxury breathing fresh sea air. you're not sailing to a resort town where you park your yacht in a mariner as a portable house while you enjoy the surrounds. you're underwater, looking at walls, in cramped spaces, breathing recycled air with a morbid fear of anything catching fire.

you can absolutely do it. no one does because it's shit unless you're a narco or rapist murderer.

A while ago, there was a company that drew up plans for a whole range of submarine yachts, but they never got any customers because the things were priced at like 4 times more than equivalently sized surface yachts, while having less desirable features on account of being submarines.
