Charging phones.

Do these actually work? I was thinking of wild camping across East Anglia this summer, but I need footpath maps plus Google maps for shops, and the public toilet map app, and the ability to just say frick it call a taxi and book a hotel when it all goes horribly wrong.

I suppose you can just get away with charging in cafes along the way, but I want my independence (while also being firmly connected to the grid)

"off grid" has multiple meaning ranging from "not on the local electrical utility system" to "doesn't have any currant active identity documentation" young sperggo.

Currently walking from Germany to Norway via Denmark and Sweden, and I'm glad i gave this one a shot. On clear blue days it charges my battery bank almost full (and i usually walk in/rest in the shade).
It also quickly recharges my mp3 player.
It's not too good at charging the phone directly, but as long as it keeps my battery bank full I've had no periods without phone power so far. And I'm sure if i just laid it out in the sun it would be even more efficient. Weights about 0.8 kilos

What's the name of the product? I've seen plenty of solar panels phone chargers, but none that hang over the bag like that

One of my mates used one when we were trekking in Nepal. He'd keep it clipped to the side of his pack while we walked and that was enough to keep both our phones and his dslr charged through the trip. Not sure what model but it was close in size to the one you posted than this dude's (). It was a bit of a hassle keeping it angled toward the sun and we had perfect weather in the mountains so it may be worth paying extra for larger, flexible panels that drape over the pack more easily.

How long does it take to charge the battery bank?

  4. 10 months ago
    Anonymous

    yes
just dont live in a sunlet country
here in Australia i got 2 solar panels put on the roof of my house way back when the govt was paying for 80% of the cost
havent needed to pay for electricity since.
even a fold-up 2ft sq panel will keep a fridge or freezer running for 1-2 weeks out camping, while also having enough left over to charge your phone.

literally the only time you hear people shit on solar panels is when it turns out they're some thirdie live in fricking Norway or Alaska

You're going to want to recharge yourself in a hotel/cafe every few days, so might as well buy a battery pack and accept reality.
Solar chargers are for niche users and true hobolifers.

I'm an actual hobo and I use 10 battery banks hooked up to an extension lead thats surge protected which is probably a lie. I connect all power banks and then have the extension plug ready to be plugged in. Looks like in charging my phone but I'm charging 10 phones at once. An hour gives me about 60 PC so I just stall in McDonald's and leech their juice. 10 10k mah PBs charged and I leech off thisr WiFi to save data jej

Reminds me of that anon who posted on PrepHole about how he was living in some social welfare accommodation and using the fact they didn't charge for electricity usage to mine hundreds of dollars of bitcoin daily. He had so many mining rigs running that the ambient temperature in his room was 45C and he'd had to run extension cords from plugs in the corridor outside because he was drawing more juice than the wiring in his room could support without blowing fuses.

I had to get the surge one bc I was afraid of short circuiting Ronald's grid. Fee times I've plugged it into places and the TV or light would flicker

Based. I lived the hobo life too for about 2 years. I miss it so much that I go be a hobo for a few days or weeks sometimes. It's pretty much my hobby. I don't beg though but I collect bottles and keep my eyes open for anything. Crazy all the stuff people loose or throw away. I did the same thing back in the day with mcs power leeching etc. Same setup lol. Just my bag I would pull out one cable and have all devices charge in the bag.

Pic unrelated. Just a weird cloud I've seen the last time

If you are referring to the little patchy area of clouds near the center of the pics, I believe those are called open cell clouds.

I also find it weird how smooth the hill becomes.

I have one that folds up and is rated for 25W (good luck pulling that much from it though). It manages to recharge powerbanks slowly, but I wouldn't hook a modern phone directly to it cuz it'll cycle between slow charging and the phone discharging faster due to power saver being inactive. Don't even look at anything with rating under 20W, you'll just get frustrated with it.

Set the phone up to use the least amount of cellular data (offline maps, pre-planned routes, etc.) and charge it from powerbanks. Rotate fully or partially drained ones to sit on the solar charger when in sun.

My approach would be to take fast charging powerbanks and a multi port fast charger to vampire the most power from any outlet you might find on your way, but try finding models that also have a "slow" output so you can save on losses between the powerbank and the phone.

I don't think you understand the environment I am talking about. South East England is one of the most densely populated areas on earth. There's no wilderness here.

Also, doubt you understand the (surprisingly under used) UK public footpath network. You can navigate it with paper maps, but for any distance I'll need several. You are also replying to me on the internet with your witty and original "cancer", suggesting you yourself do not live like Uncle Ted either.

Anyway, I think external battery is the way to go and you should stop being a sperg.

I didn’t use one on my Pinhoti hike (it’s 300 miles/480km). Charging a phone on a random outlet feels a lot like gathering water from a drinking fountain. It’s more like taking advantage of an available resource than being connected to something.
