Cavaly tactics

If you were the commander of a 6,000 strong army of heavy cavalry would you charge headlong into a line of 30 foot tall oliphaunts? If not how else would you try to bring them down?

Approach from their flank and do the cantabrian meme with lots of javelins and arrows. Protip: Shoot at it until it dies.

Better question is how do you deal with angry ghost warriors.

They'd already completed a flank attack against the orcs. It's not a videogame, Theoden's army reforming enough to even meet the Oliphants is miraculous. In real life it would have been a pain in the arse to get 100 horses and actors into position- and nobody (except the Wetta's) were trying to kill them.

I would do it the smart way and retreat. Orcs have trampled the Pelennor so theres probably not much crops there. Food will have to be transported all the way from fricking Minas Morgul, past Ithilien, and past Osgiliath to reach the besieging orcs. I'd imagine beasts the size of Oliphaunts will need a lot of fricking grain. Regardless, siege is lifted, retreat and let reinforcements from the rest of Gondor come. When Mordor once again gathers its strength they will no doubt try again. When they lay siege to Minas Tirith, I go around them and take Osgiliath and cut their supply lines. They will no doubt try to retake Osgiliath in panic. Thats when Minas Tirith sallies out, caught in a pincer, they will flee north where I will have set up plenty of ambushes.

Not major enough to feed 500k orcs for more than a 1 day I assure you.

              >more than a 1 day I assure you.
well what if I assure you of the contrary? what arguments are we gonna use here? how big was the orc army? how many rohirrim fell as well? we can exclude most MT dead if you want since they died inside the walls mostly. if your argument is meat spoiling fine, its only a couple of days.

Fine. Lets say there is enough dead to feed the orcs for a hundred days, enough to take Minas Tirith by siege, if they could preserve it all. Okay, they just smoke all the corpses and can preserve it for that long. The Rohirrim don't even bother attacking them while they do that. Gondor's reinforcements are arriving by ships. The Orcs were just slaughtered and their morale is weakened. How are you going to maintain the siege even if you can feed the Orcs?
                >muh Oliphaunts
If Oliphaunts were that OP the Harad would have conquered Mordor by now. Rome would be salted by Carthage. Do you have any idea how much fricking meat you need to feed beasts that size as well as hundreds of thousands of Orcs? In the books its not mentioned how many Orcs and Easterlings there are but your idea of cannibalizing the dead to feed the army is fricking absurd.

                What are the Rohirrim eating?
Arent the waterways harassable and threatable, especially since apparantly in this scenario no army of the dead arrives?
                >Do you have any idea how much fricking meat you need to feed beasts that size as well as hundreds of thousands of Orcs
I wouldnt be aware that the Oliphants are pure carnivores. also, i dont think they are a net minus in for food supplies in any case, because they are giant beasts that can be slaughtered and eaten?
idk this entire argument wont lead anywhere since it lacks too many detailed factors that are important.
All I wanted to convey is that in my opinion orcs have a slight advantage in terms of what they can eat and endure eating. I dont think MT residents wanna munch on their cousins, and I dont think orcs have any fricking problem doing so.

    People really misremember this sequence.

Theoden, encountering something he'd never seen before, did the only thing he could think of to avoid a general rout, his ill fated charge only cost them a few hundred men at most.

The Rohirrim immediately pivoted to encircling the Mumaks, attacking the crew, attacking the legs, the head, and the battle actually turned back in their favor.

Seriously watch the scene again and don't get swept up in the shock of seeing dozens of horses killed at once or the scary "uh oh something bad is happening" music stings.

The Rohirrim take some hard losses from the initial charge, then within a couple of minutes they're only losing guys in ones and twos but the mumakil start dropping. After a couple minutes like half a dozen of the things are fricking dead.

Think about all the work it took to get those fricking elephants there, only to get killed by 1/100th their weight in horses.
