You guys are ignoring the fact that pirates can go on land. Yes, a gorilla could be on a ship and maybe that ship gets boarded by pirates, or maybe the gorilla is trained to shoot a cannon on a ship. But, statistically it's more likely gorillas and pirates would fight on land, maybe some place like Gorilla Island, I don't know. So land-based gorillartillery vs. pirates is more likely.

Wikipedia tells me that a modern shaped charge will penetrate armour grade steel to a depth of up to seven times the diameter of the charge, which would make it a lot more than 5x more effective than a cannonball of the same size if I'm any judge - especially against a wooden vessel

I don't understand why Civil War-era muzzleloading blackpowder cannons like the one in OP's pic aren't used for hunting elephants and snow geese. You wouldn't have to get dangerously close to the elephant, and you could get snow geese on the ground from a mile away. If you used smokeless powder instead of blackpowder you might get two miles. If you used like a mini cannon one person could carry it. A cannon would work on all game, you'd just need to load it lighter, like 1/3rd the powder and an aluminum cannonball for pheasants and rabbits, etc. With light loads you'd ruin less meat because you wouldn't shoot holes in it, the cannonball would basically club it, like hitting a rabbit with a sledgehammer, thus preserving the meat. And if SHTF you could load it with match heads from the store, or hairspray like a potato gun but vastly more powerful because it's a cannon.

A giant cannon being used to disable a tank would logically need to be some kind of hidden single shot trap at close range, something camouflaged in a large amount of material, or fired from surprise at a high angle towards a pre-sighted in location.
I doubt such a large cannon as in that simulation would be required to mission kill MBT, or at least throw a track.
