Candles

Hi PrepHole. I make candles as a hobby. I’m only just getting into it but I’ve already made a couple and I wanted to share them. I also wanted to know if any of you guys on here make candles, and if you had any tips on how to properly colour the wax and bind fragrances to the wax?

Here’s my most recent pour. I cannibalised a number of older store bought candles I got for free from friends and family members, and threw in a mix of oils. It’s got a very bold scent, a bit like freshly cut pine but more potent.

I made this for my sister as a Christmas gift. I used a lot of vanilla oil - my sister said it smelled like a bit like toasted marshmallows

Made this with some unscented blue and yellow wax, and added in some eucalyptus oil for fragrance.

that's cool but no I don't make candles, I can't imagine it would be very economical
i get all my candles from a resale shop for stupid cheap amounts, like $1 for a big jar Yankee candle. maybe if you want to bastardize candles to make your own with more potent scents and wood wicks you should start there, you could save a lot of money. I've got a big plastic bin filled with candles that weighs about 100 lbs, probably more, and they were all stupid cheap.

Store it outside, at least 20-feet from the structure.

while a cool idea and probably fun the first time and as gifts
not something im interested in doing more than once, especially since candles are pretty cheap.
maybe you could make molds for funky designs with a 3d printer or something

You know these small flat aluminum tins with a lid? You can put 3 wicks in those and then pour scented wax mixes, it takes very little time and wax to fill them, and you get a candle in a gift box. Worst case it’s good practice, best case you sell them at $7 each

Nice profit. How do you melt the wax.

paraffin wax is a by product of coal refinement. beeswax is the traditional material and has a pleasant scent to it already

learn to dip wicks in wax and make 10"-1' tall candles that way. 10 dips -> 1" diameter. this is an ideal diameter for a consistent light and burn without issues of too much wax drips or caverns in the wax when the wick burns down due to the diameter being too large

not sure id want to burn any industrially produced colorant. u never know what they put in those.
pine sap is quite fragrant. i would look into ingredients used in traditional incense and experiment adding that to candles.

adding scents to candles kind of changes their function from being a tool to being a toy though. i mean if u want to sell them at some point people will pay and theyll want a colored scented thing anyway.

another benefit of not using glasses or other containers is u dont need to clean them once the wick has burned down

I just started making a few for shiggles. I'm getting shit scent throw from my onions wax despite using a wax that can take a lot of oil and loading it up. I thought this would be a melt and go kinda thing, but maybe not.
