You asked was it possible, it wouldn't be very efficient. You'd have to have some sort of magazine set up to continually have blanks fed and discharged on the return stroke of the pistons

Oh, and it would also be incredibly filthy. You'd have a stupid amount of carbon build up and would probably get like 50 miles on an oil change

        >I would like something that weighs about as much as an electric battery, can only be used once, and takes tons of material to run.

Not really at all, no. It is theoretical more like. It would need some sort of attention every two minutes and would not be good at doing a damn thing.

You just need a blowback gun with breach block attached to a crankshaft and (maybe) a plugged barrel.

Yes. Mythbusters did it. Gov did the design work on massive space arcologies using nukes as propulsion. Ir basically used a massive pogo stick to even out the shock.

Myth Busters was using gun powder, not shells.
12 ga shotgun shell blanks were used as a starter on some farm tractors though.

As a super lightweight starter blanks sound compelling, otherwise the fouling from build up is going to get ridiculous fast

Is this episode even on youtube? whats the name of this scene/episode? Has someone a webm of it?

Some prop planes used to have shotgun shell starters. As fuel? No. Smokey Yunick tried it - it worked, but no appreciable power increase and engine was dirty as frick.

Now that's a name I haven't heard in ages. Frickin legend.

    Like, me personally?
    No, probably not.
Maybe with simple instructions, as long as I don't need a lathe or a mill or something like that.

    Why do you ask?

There's the nuclear fart pogo stick ship. They did the math for a ship 80x larger than an aircraft carrier.

Belt-fed machinegun continuously fires inside a pressure tank, creating high pressure which feeds into steam engine.

      Blanks won't cycle a rifle

        There are adapters.

We could add a cam driven valve which would feed some of the high pressure directly into the cycling mechanism of the gun…like a fuel pump in the car

like a gas port on a gun?

        Anonymous

probably could, but it wouldn't be a good engine, no purpose beyond a thought exercise. depending on how it functions, one shot may equal a single piston stroke, so even a couple hundred shots wouldn't bring the motor very far. and stroke comes with a brass ballast that you first need to carry your "fuel" around with you and then right after using it need to eject and get rid of. it's like if gasoline came in little 5ml tide pods made of metal.

may not cycle a rifle designed for live rounds, but absolutely could cycle the weird not-a-firearm device required and designed specifically for a blank cartridge motor.
since the goal would be to achieve some rotation, a gatling gun mechanism could also be possibly used (powered by the motor, with a sort of gear shift between motor and firing mechanism to vary the power of the engine via different firing rates.

        >Blanks won't cycle a rifle
BFA muzzle adapters exist for this.

        Anonymous

Blanks won't cycle because there is not enough pressure buildup due to no bullet obstructing the barrel.

yes, the Supermarine Spitfire uses a cartridge powered single cylinder to start its main engine

That in no way makes the method suitable for RUNNING an engine. Where do you non-mechanics get your moronic ideas? It's a gas-generator-powered starter motor.

You'd want a hit and miss style engine.
it basically does a big bang and gets the fly wheel spinning, as the flywheel slows to a set RPM The govener will fire another blank.

    Short answer, no.

    Long answer:
There are some things which might technically qualify as engines that you could fire (but not run) with black powder or cordite.
The only reason you would ever do this to externally ignite an engine with a failed starter motor, if for whatever reason you couldn't scrounge another starter motor, jerry rig a starter motor, and you had an obsolete clown tier piston starter from a 1900s prop plane.

No, no you cannot run an engine on gunpowdee or cordite. It would blow up the cylinder, foul the engine, you'd have no way to fire it a second time, you'd have to rebuild half the engine just to cycle it once.
