Depends on zoning. Buy rural land and you can do whatever the frick you want on it. I bought a 3 acre lot in shithole Oklahoma and lived in a 5th wheel RV until I was able to build my shop-house

But was it because no one saw you or reported you?

No, nothing I did was illegal. What the hell would they report me for? And the property is highway frontage and I have neighbors so it's not like nobody saw me

I remember seeing a thread bout someone in Kentucky doing something similar and his boomer neighbors reported him to the town who told him he wasn't allowed to live on the property unless he had a dwelling with X,Y, etc... and there was as huge court fight

that sounds like a Home Owners Association or something similar...restrictions....purchase UNRESTRICTED land in an UNINCORPORATED COUNTY

Depends on your specific township, municipality, county, etc. Generally, the more built up it is, the higher the chance of someone throwing a fit.
Why? Because 1 dude living in a tent on his 4 acres is called camping. 100 people living in tents on a quarter of an acre is called a homeless camp and a public health hazard.

Study YOUR specific situation in YOUR area. Nothing else matters. Copy success. Not mentioning where you live was stupid.

Obtain plat map from the county showing zoning and any easements. Get a perc test to ensure you can install septic. Study how to buy land. There is no reason you cannot devote fifty or a hundred hours to learning this stuff so do that. I did.

Once you finally have something you worked for, you'll realize law enforcement and most of the bullshit that comes with it (property laws, zoning, etc) is good.
Go outside - for your own good

              no, laws are all bad
the part he's wrong about is that you don't want to draw attention from cops, so seeing the laws to understand what you have to hide and what you don't is still useful to some extent
also better to be safe than sorry, if you're not sure if it's illegal or not (or whether it may in the future), hide it. Hide as much as possible

              Get real.
If you try to camp or live in a hovel/rv/tent in some areas then you will be removed as soon as anyone finds out about it. There are other areas where noone will give a shit regardless of whether it's strictly legal or not.

Noone can answer OP's question about legality when he doesn't specify what area. And reading between the lines, the real question that should be asked is not whether it is legal, but whether it is doable or workable in a given place.

I'm sorry if that offends your delicate sensibilities, xir.

As long as you're outside of any municipalities you should be good. Besides, if nobody else is there, what the frick are they gonna do about it?

(I also plan to do the same)

                >should

So do you plan to check first to know what you have to work around?

some small towns and villages are also ok with you not building right away. not that common but I've seen some vacant lots that allow that.

I will be able to afford the house in 5 years barring no major emergencies
      >why not just wait 5 years and do it all at the same time
Because there will be no affordable land left to buy. It's bad enough as it is right now

Depends on where you live and the related planning restrictions but there may be sneaky ways around it.
For example i'm in ireland and the planning authorities are pretty anal here. A way around them I thought might work goes like this
    >permanent structures require planning
    >however you can park and use a caravan on the site as long as it's no longer than 6 months then it has to be removed from the property for one calander year
    >so by some land, say 4 acres
    >go into the land registry office and sub divide it into 4 parcels
    >every 6 months just push the caravan onto a new parcel
    >keep on rotating until your first parcel is good again and just repeat
Technically this is legal but the authorities won't like it and would go after you since you are breaking the spirit of the law even though they would nail you to the wall if you technically breach any of their moronic rules, spirit be damned

Here and I would assume elsewhere, only permanent structures (with foundations) require permits. You could build something to live in for $200 in lumber.

      Anonymous

Whether building permits are required or not has little to nothing to do with whether a particular structure can be used as a residence.

All kinds of structures where the builders and owners pull permits, get inspected, etc. don't meet the legal requirements for residential structures, whether it's over minimum habitability requirements, zoning restrictions or both.

I did this with a 96 sq foot tiny house specifically designed around the part of the tow code titled "buildings that do not require a permit"
10 yrs later finishing house now. Neighbors and town were chill it turns out. Appraisers knew about it.

    No
    Because you need a shitter.
Often a tank that is pumped regularly will do.

However, most people wont say much if you are rural, quiet, and organized.
