Baofengs are honestly gtg in most cases.

The main problem is water getting in. Either keep them in a drybag or make the upgrade to some waterproof yaesu radios. Better build quality and thus durability. Its a jap company but the radios are still made in china and are therefore cheap but a step up from a baofeng.

I'm a Yaesu guy but it's really not about the radio. RF has not really changed since the 50s, electronics have just become cheaper and more efficient so the same design can be made more compact. You can add fancy screens and shit but it's still just an analog radio signal at the end of the day.

the best thing about picking a lock, and you can do a Master Padlock in 30 seconds or less after you get it down, with just a rake and tensioner, is that you can put the lock back and no one can tell you broke in.

Again may never use, but what I figure is this... my skills are limited, but maybe there will be a person, nurse/emt/doctor nearby that has skills but no tools available, well I have the tools so he can use my stuff to help a person since I already have it. Decentralization like that is precisely what we need. Plan should be like everybody has a first aid kit, sutures, basic surgical tools, everybody has toilet paper, flashlight etc. so a person should be able to knock on a random door and say do you have a kit I can use? and person inside says right here! So much depends on where you live,;your situation, where you're bugging out to, how much you can carey and how far you can go in a day. My bug-out location is two days away on foot, I cam carry 60-70 pounds indefinitely at my normal pace, so I have enough in my bug out to survive for four days.

The best thing to do right now if you are planning on bugging out is just practice run it a few times.
Load your pack with what you think you will need, take your rifle and ammo, wear your boots and head out for a hike.
Just do a hike where you plan to go for 3 to 4 days a few times and you will figure out what's worth the weight in your pack.
In the military I humped around a 60-75lb pack... it's not fun. You need to practice and build up those muscles. The first time you hike with even 45lbs for over 4 miles your body will be sore and usless for at least a day. You will need to do these hikes once a week for at least 2 months to get in shape for it.
That being said, I'm a prepped, I live in the woods, I have a amazing set up with even a deep underground panic room (really deep)... I've been setting my prep up for 10 years and I have enough money to do it right.
I just want you to know though if you go to your local forest, small town on the edge of national forest... the locals are going to kill you. Neighbors plan to defend our area by killing anyone who drives a vehical up here. For the Baofeng, I suggest buying one of the AA battery adapters for it, and selling off the Lithium-ion battery that it came with. Lithium-ion batteries are generally awful for emergency preparedness due to their limited lifespan, high self-discharge, and difficult in sourcing replacements. Avoid Lithium-ion wherever possible, and if you do use Lithium-ion batteries, write a list of them all and set reminders to check them and top them up every few months - otherwise they'll be discharged and permanently degraded/dead when you come to use them later. What you want are LSD NiMH batteries, e.g. the prized Eneloop battery.
Other things for you to look into prepping:
Self defense: A good gun since you're an American, and a knife/machete. I'm a Britbong so I'm stuck with crossbows unfortunately. Also consider a slingslot since it's super portable and can use rocks as ammo. Body armour and shields too.
Medical: Get all sorts of First Aid supplies, plasters, bandages, dressing, thermometer, skin stapler, cold packs, wound closure strips, quick slot, tourniquette, etc. Consider foot care since you might be walking a lot. Stockpile meds, especially antibiotics. Look up the Jase Case since you're an American. Pain killers, antihistamines, anti-anxiolytics. You wannt anti-diarrhea pills so you don't get dehydrated during SHTF. Caffeine pills to keep you going. EpiPen if you can. Vitamins too.
Drinking & Eating: water, water containers, water purification tablets, cooksets/stoves (Trangia, Firebox, Solo Stove), freeze-dried food, MREs, utensils, salt, water flavouring powder.
Hygiene: Bars of soap (better than liquid), pocket tissues, toilet paper tablets, dental floss, toothbrush, toothpaste, nail clippers.
Personal: Copy of your birth certificate, passport, driving license, etc. for identification. Copies of your education certificates. Up-to-date family photos. Phone numbers.
Energy: LSD NiMH AA batteries, chargers for them. Lithium primary AA batteries. Other batteries like coin batteries, CR123, etc. USB cables with connectors for all the different types, USB-A, USB-C, MicroUSB, Garmin, etc. DC adapter heads. Get a good power bank like an Anker one and a small solar panel for the bugout bag. Get a large power station like a Bluetti and some big solar panels for at-home use. A hand crank is good too as a last ditch option.
Communication: Baofeng ham radio which you already have. Regular radio that picks up as many frequencies as possible. Look up frequencies used in your area and write them down so you know where to look when SHTF. Get a long wire antennna. Whistle, signalling mirror, emergency flares.
Navigation: Paper road maps, compass (Suunto MC-2 G), binoculars/monocular, drone.
Lighting: Headlamp, torch, lantern, night vision, thermal vision, glow sticks, tea light candles.
Tools: Fixed blade knife, folding knife, multitool, machete, axe/hatchet, folding saw, pocket wire saw, screwdriver set, knife sharpener, shovel, bolt cutters, crowbar, rip claw hammer, halligan bar (Stanley FuBar III), handcuff keys, utility keys, emergency services keys. Look up what kind of keys police, firemen, disabled people, etc. use in your area and get copies for yourself. Consider if you'll be in a woodland or urban environment and what kind of tools you'll need. Will you be collecting firewood and building things innawoods? Or breaking down doors in the city as you move around scavenging goods from abandoned homes?
Clothes/Shelter: Tarp, sleeping bag, bivvy, tent, sleeping mat, bug spray, sunscreen, blankets, merino base layers, mid layers, softshell and hardshell outer layers, good walking boots (at least two pairs), poncho, hats, protective gloves, shemagh, paracord shoe laces.
Fire: Lighters, fire striker, stormproof matches, pocket bellows, fresnel lens, cotton balls, petroleum jelly.
Dangerous hazards PPE: Fire extinguisher, fire blanket, gas mask (get one that takes 40mm NATO filters, good ones are Mira Safety CM-6M, Scott FRR, Scott GSR modded to take 40mm, Scott Promask, Chink MF14, Chink MF-11), gas mask filters (different filters protect against different stuff so check them, for nuclear fallout you just need a basic P3 particulate filter, but for general use ABEK P3 is great), level B hazmat suit, rubber boots, rubber gloves, chemical tape, radiation dosimeter or geiger counter.
Digital: Backup of all your stuff. Download informational/educational encyclopedias, wikis, websites, videos, etc. 3D printing files and instructions. Linux distros. Books. There are archives online with prepper-specific stuff bundled together, great to download, but you should definitely pick things out yourself.
Put it into a spreadsheet, break it down by category, and you can pht multiuse items in special categories. List prices, sum them at the end.

It's cheap so why not, but don't spend a fortune on stuff you'll never use, just buy more of what you do use and store in a safer place WHERE YOU MOVE TO NOW when you have choices of where to live.
You need a radio, water purification tabs, a tarp, camp ax, knife, some paracord, a few MRE's, mess kit, medical kit, sidearm, hunting rifle or shotgun, 2 changes of clothing appropriate for your area, blanket, saw, shovel, and a ham radio. Should get you by for about three days until a base camp can be established.
I just load mine up with a gallon of lube and rubber gloves. That way when the rape gangs chase me down for my supplies they let me join them instead of rape me in the butthole.

I got a rotating stock of 6 month supply of canned foods with a 24 month shelf life, preservatives-filled pastries that have 10 to 12 months shelf life, capri sun pouch fruit drinks, shitty cups of fruit and pudding with a 14 months shelf life, energy drinks that'll last 3 years or so, 24 cases of bottled water.
