A suppressor with subsonic ammunition is whisper quiet, but suppressors still have a usefulness with standard rounds. It still reduces your profile, and it can at least reduce the sound to the point of not requiring hearing protection. They made them standard issue with the NGSW for the first time in history.
They are very useful for hunting, and even just shooting at the range without hearing protection.

Because in CQB putting a can on a 20" M27 gives you a 26" barrel you may as well room clear with an M1 Garand

Americans do because we can, can. Shooting supersonic ammunition suppressed means that you and those around you don't experience anywhere near the full effect of the sonic boom of the bullet. It gives you a few more inches of travel, and mainly prevents the gas explosion out of the muzzle from blinding you. Most suppressors have an attenuating effect on the barrel and can improve accuracy. I really don't understand this seething response, suppressors make everything better. Night shooting, day shooting, target shooting, hunting, killing enemy combatants, whatever. It's just better, anon. Stop whinging.
It should be illegal to use your gun in public without a muffler (which should be simple unregulated parts) just like a car, it's meant to be there.

I have no idea who this Brit you're talking about is, but I like my silencers.
Modern silencers don't necessarily build up additional fouling in the action, and are useful for signature reduction and communication. There is a reason why the latest large US military small arms acquisitions include them. All of the new silencers from Sig and Huxwerx cause zero additional back-pressure, and some of the new CGS cans maximize suppression while being quite a bit lower back-pressure than older designs.

If you are a machinegunner with an aircooled mg. That supressor will get hot awfully quickly. Dunno about the maxim since it is watercooled might have less trouble if installed to sink a lot of the heat into the waterjacket. It hides the muzzleflash , distorts and reduces the sound of gunfire so one might not know how far away he is being shot at from. Especially during a loud battle. Guns with supressors can function withouth a gas tune but tuning the gas system reduces wear and tear as well as reducing the fouling . Some gats might be more resistant to fouling. Extreme example (but only marginally related) of fouling resistance is the long recoil system of the browning auto 5 which can fire black powder withouth fetting too caked up (barrel/chamber follows the bolt backwards before returning to position after which the spent cartrige is ejected increasing theamount of black powder soot deposited in and out of the barrel decreasing the leakage into the internals.

It was among the first mass produced semiauto shottyes (sjorgen inertial comming out " If I remember" , a fiew weeks after the browning A5, completely seperate developement). It Was made for a long time. Nowdays you have less recoiling, faster action inertials that can shoot lowbrass and magnums reliably, lightweight gas guns with self adjusting gas systems ecc. The britbongs used the Brwng A5 allongside pumpactions, browning hp's FAL's for a while. So it wasnt terrible. Tune it to your load with friction rings (it was the first cut it some slack) , shoulder it properly and start blasting
British CIVILIANS are allowed to own and use suppressors for hunting because they reduce the noise pollution and preserve the hunt for others in the area.

Nothing. They work perfectly well and are very useful with subsonic ammunition like special forces use them, they will change the fouling and gas regulation on any HV ammunition weapon though as well as the point of aim
Poorly designed suppressors can increase fouling but most firearms are well designed enough to run well despite fouling. Also, most people who buy suppressors are conscious of this and compensate with a different gas block setting... The POA/POI shift is real also but again it can be mitigated by knowing your offset and just rezeroing to that new point of impact. Nonissues.

I think Americans who comprise the vast majority of people in this thread are missing some context. When people talk about suppressors in Ukraine 99% of the time they aren't talking about your super cool ass OSS can tested for sixty consecutive magdumps with a nifty flash hider mount and flowthrough features. What they are referring to is shitty ass aluminum or steel suppressors at your local European shooting goods store that are generally just direct thread stuff that costs like the equivalent of a couple hundred eurodollars and usually meant for bolt actions. They will still kind of work but they will cause significantly more pressure and they will unthread itself in full auto a lot of the time.
Even though it's not directly relevant but like here in Finland the absolute vast majority of all suppressors you'd find at a store are some semi-local brands like Jaki that while decent are purely made with hunting in mind and only people who own AR's and whatnot will buy the more robust and "tactical" silencers and you won't find them everywhere.
