Bring back DUDS for all infantrymen!

This proves we don't need a new rifle or a new caliber. Just issue DU small caliber rounds to all troops and it will defeat PLA armor.

Depleted uranium is toxic but barely radioactive.

The plate, which in fairness is a top-tier plate, defeated the rounds, though.
The first barely poked through, and would have been stopped by a Kevlar backer. The second must have yawed, and didn't penetrate even at over 3800 fps.

That was just with a 308. Imagine a 5.56 loading going at even faster velocity.

You can probably push it to .220 Swift velocities, like 4300 fps, but your barrel life is gonna be real short. Especially shooting saboted rounds, which can damage barrels whenever they don't work perfectly.

This is a subcaliber round, you can generate faster velocities with .308 than 5.56 given equal penetrator mass.

Making a tiny 5.56 APDS bullet that travels over 3800 FPS is unlikely to be successful as the penetrator is so small that it will likely just shatter on the strike face of the plate. Not to mention the absolutely atrocious ballistic coefficient of such a round over range.

I suspect the round didn't fully separate from the sabot before hitting the plate, might have caused reduced performance

lmao looking forward to the sigger cope. DU didn't defeat that plate at 3800 fps, surely hardened steel going 1000fps slower will do it!

In fairness it’s pretty hard to tell wtf was even going on in that test. Faulty chrono on the first shot? Bullet tumbling on the second? (Why did they use a muzzle brake with an APDS round???) ESAPI as backer instead of clay?

It’s not really relevant to the NGSW regardless since the plate has also been tested to stop M80A1 and M993 at over 3400 FPS and both of those threats (particularly the .300 Win Mag M993) are likely to far exceed the penetration capabilities of a 6.8 steel core EPR at ~2900 FPS.

Adept bringing spookplates to civilians is the best thing to happen in the last year. So far the only thing thats convincingly penetrated one is 8mm Mauser SMKH using a huge tungsten heavy alloy core.
I want them to make a 7.5lb version that stops .50cal AP

What happens with the rifle after shooting this round? Is it getting contaminated and requires additional cleaning procedures? I mean, from watching police criminal investigation videos, i learned about gun powder resedue and this shit gets EVERYWHERE. Imagine gpr, but radioactive. what the actual frick

Gun barrel probably fine outside is contaminated but not that big of an issue, it's that pyrophoric slpashback he inhaled that's the real issue probably got in eyes as well. Creating a radiological contaminated area that will require remediation is where he is gonna get BTFO by EPA and maybe NRC

The uranium isn't in the gunpowder, but in the bullet. Likely encased in a bit of a jacket.

More of a toxic threat than radiological, though it's the latter people will freak out over. On the other hand the radioactivity makes it easy to check with a Geiger counter if you've gotten rid of it properly.

The dumbasses in this thread know that what makes DU toxic is the heavy metals, right? Its barely radioactive itself and wouldn't harm you unless you're breathing in heavy amounts of dust contaminated with it or if it hits the water supply.

What's the point of even worrying about armor penetration when plates like this are readily available right now and are only going to get cheaper, thinner, and lighter over time?

It's crazy that there are body armor plates these days that offer better protection than APCs. That plate literally performs better than the M113.
