Best glue for wrapping up dumbbell handles?

Hello friends,

I want to add rope around my dumbbell handle because the knurling is too aggressive and I want the handle thicker for more grip gains.

What is the best glue for this?
How long should I let it tack before I apply the rope?

I would just use RTV silicone in a caulk gun. You can work the silicone into the rope, wrap it around the bar, then wrap with wax paper then wrap tape around that. Let it cure for a day or two. Just make sure you wrap it tight enough to make a continuous coil.
Alternatively you can spend more and get something even more durable if you wanted.

You could get a two part urethane or silicone molding rubber. I make molds and use Smooth On materials. Google the name. You can also find trial units on Amazon of the stuff. They’ll be more than enough for what you need. You’ll have to figure out what durometer you want.

Just mix the two parts and soak the rope for a few minutes. Wrap around bar and hold it in place by wrapping with wax paper and taping around the wax paper. You can use mold release on the wax paper but it won’t be necessary with silicone and probably won’t be with urethane but you never know.

Urethane is far more durable but some of the silicones are certified skin safe and they make “appliances ”(fake body parts) actors wear
Regardless make sure you use rope that is absorbent no nylon. The rubber can separate if don’t.
Glue would probably be easier but the grips made from rubber and rope will last forever and not soak up sweat. It won’t bond to the metal but it will stay in place due to the grip already on the bar. If you really want to do your method, Smooth On makes adhesives that will absolutely get the job done too but I’ve never used any that you would use for this.

if the knurling is that aggressive why would you need glue? it can't even grip onto a fibrous rope on its own yet it's too rough for your little girl hands? this is pathetic anyway, just grow calluses like a man.

      > just grow calluses like a man.
This. Or wear gloves. If you wrap it in cord, the cord will suck up all your nasty palm sweat and get gross anyway.

what do you need grip gains for with little girl hands? grab onto something too hard and you'll just be damaging your soft, delicate skin. princesses shouldn't be picking up heavy things anyway, just have your man do it for you.

I've had some barbells that had knurling sharper than a wood rasp, they would rip into thick leather work gloves with only like 30 pounds on them.

Buddy of mine donned some rubber gloves and smeared liquid nails all over the iron post in his basement Rec room then wrapped it with rope. He had 3 small boys and 2 of them had previously split their heads open on the bare metal post. The rope is still fully attached 30 years later.

I did something similar to make an industrial-strength cat scratching post. They'd climb the pole like a tree.
