Best Career Alternative?

I’m 20 year old guy who’s halfway through his arts degree, planning to go into Law school. I’m not the best student (3.5gpa) so I have concerns about getting in.

As a contingency, what career alternative could I plausibly discern in the meanwhile? Can a person just walk into a plumbing apprenticeship during the summer?

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

you should get into a JD program with that gpa. Do good on your entrance exam to help offset your imperfect GPA

Us philosophy majors have the highest average LSAT so hopefully it works! 😀

If you're half way through an arts degree then you still have enough time to switch to a non-arts degree. immediately start learning programming and make like 2 nice projects you're proud of for your resume.

I have insane software engineering connections but I have zero interest in that at all.

Majored in philosophy, minor in arts. was supposed to go to law school. didn't. Sometimes I regret it. My little sister somehow got through law school, didn't pass the bar in our state, but did in nebraska or something. After 2 years of working, she was able to get reciprocity in our state. I'm 13 years older than her, and her 2nd job pays her almost as much as I make running my own small business.

I know lots of people who went to law school, and then moved into business, or wealth management, or whatever the frick. If you have family paying for it, and you can put in the time and work - I'd say do it.

keep them and watch them grow. Software companies all need legal, and understanding tech + law = kick ass thief/magic-user kind of skills

Once you get kicked out of the arts program you should write a book about your life. I would suggest a simple title like "My Struggle".

Ayo, howdy fellow multi-career-track drifter. I’m agricultural equipment repair and land use lawyering. It’s nice, because it lets me do something that is always in demand (ag will never stop) so I can be picky about the legal stuff I want to pursue. Or, alternatively, when the ag guys are being buttholes, I can focus on my legal work. The legal money is better, but the ag work is steady.

I think the question is not so much “what will leave me gainfully employed,” since most trades and blue-collar work is in demand, but what crowd will you tolerate and where you have some background. I used to do heavy trucks. Those guys are fricking moronic, rarely speak English above the third grade, and are dishonest. Pro tip: If you’re working with, ahem, “certain demographics,” you ask for money up front. Some of them will never pay if they think they can get away with it.

I'd finish your current degree then go pick up a trade like plumbing or HVAC. Law School admissions are much tougher on recent graduates than people who went out and worked for a few years. Stack up at least 50-60k and then apply for law school.

There's at least a 50% chance you'll drop out or regret it otherwise.

Do something practical, meaningful and rewarding. EMT, nurse, rescue or something.

If you want a fall back trade, figure out how to get into the elevator tech/ installations
One of the best blue collar jobs wage wise and you don’t have to put up with typical trade shit. It’s also pretty varied work surprisingly.

That’s very interesting for whatever reason. Can you tell me how you came to know about this?
