Beginner Rifles

What up /k/
I'm looking into getting my first gun, has to be a rifle because to buy a pistol in North Dakota you need to be 21. Is this Ruger 10/22 with a Scope a good pick for $380?

yeah, but I'd get a bolt action .22 instead, more fun working the bolt imo

Like it's not my first time shooting a gun or whatever, I did trap shooting in high school. Now that I think about it they would probably just give me the .22 savage they have. Is it better to just get into something that shoots 5.56?

If you can handle the cost of ammo sure. But .22 is .22.

Isn't .22 the cheapest ammo you can get these days?

Yeah that's what I mean. 5.56 is easily $.50 or more cents per round while .22 is still found for around $30ish for 500 rounds (used to be $20). As for that particular 10/22 and retailer I go back on the whole saving money thing. There's almost no difference in price between the combo and bare rifle so get it if you really do want the scope.

        meh
always good to have a .22 you enjoy because ammo is so cheap

Are you actually going to be any shooting that justifies using .223 over .22lr? Or would you just be looking at needing to order in bulk online to get ammo for 40c/round online rather than being able to buy for 8c/round locally just for the sake of having more recoil and noise?

what scope? might be better off buying a barebones one and adding on a nicer scope. You probably won't regret a 10/22 though they just work.

The scope is likely fine enough for .22 and plinking but I'd just save the money and get the rifle by itself and a better scope later. Use the savings on bx25 mags and steel spinner targets.

Out of all my firearms, I probably shoot my 10/22 the most. Just something about it reminds me when I was a teenager, hanging out with my brother or friends, just shooting cans or squirrels. Always bring a smile to my face.

Get a 10/22 but practice with iron sights. Some models have really nice sights installed (tech sights?) And learn the real basics. $380 seems really high Dick's used to blow out the base model for $199 every October. You should be able to find a bone stock 10/22 for $250. Spend the difference on bx-25 magazines and more ammo.

10/22 is a fantastic beginner rifle.
If you're a fan of bolt actions I would also recommend a CZ 457 as they are very accurate and very easy to use - pic related.

Other than that I would say a lever action in .22 would also be a good choice.

Great first gun. Buy it, shoot it, then save up and get an AR

Unironically buy a 12 gauge shot gun or cheap bolt gun chamber in something hefty like 308, Recoil builds character
Pic related was my first gun

Going with a 10/22 is a great pick for a first rifle. Cheap to shoot, huge aftermarket, unbannable. Idk about whatever scope is coming with you. You might enjoy just throwing a cheap(ish) RDS and go from there.

10/22 is great choice, personally i would get the cheapest-most bare bones model you can find because eventually your gonna wanna modify it anyway. Better trigger, auto bolt release, and sights are a must imo, they make the 10/22 a significantly better gun.
