I'm heading PrepHole soon to the middle of nowhere in rural Alaska for about 3 months for work. Will .303 British reliably stop a black bear? I figured it was best to bring something to defend myself as a last resort
>shotgun with brenneke slugs
if there were brown bear that's exactly what I'd do, but there will only be black bear
>Glock 20
plastic strikershit is gay and I don't have the money to buy a new gun anyway
Just dont bother the bears? Also dont know what kind of work you will be doing but a gun only works if you are carrying it constantly, can't imagine lugging around a shitty ww2 era surplus gun when a can of bearspray would be much more convenient if not more reliable at deterring critters.
It's hatchery work, I'd only ever carry it when hiking outside the premises, and probably not every time I go
the reason I chose this one in particular is that it's the lightest gun I own that I feel could reliably stop a bear
I own an m1 carbine as well, but I'm not sure how effective .30 carbine would be against bear
>why are you bringing a gun
because bear protection is a good excuse to bring a gun. I'll have bear spray as well
Yes 303 will kill a black bear. Maybe spend $500 on a 10mm glock, easier to carry.
>because bear protection is a good excuse to bring a gun
based knower
Glocks are not the best gun as they lack a safety, and striker fire is a pain in the ass in a panic situation. For a bear get a Beretta 9mm ethier a px4 or a m9 variant, you can get them pretty cheap as surplus, and it has double action single action with a hammer. You can threaten the bear and then pull the hammer back so the bear knows you're serious.
303 will kill a bear but also consider a 200 dollar 12 Guage shotgun, even a short 410 Will kill it better with a slug or buckshot, although you won't get semi auto benefits with it. A 357 revolver would be cool and the bear would not mind getting shot by a 357(very cool gun). I hate all bears with a passion. They belong in zoos and as far away from humans as possible. Bear spray and then shoot it in the back.
This is bait
incorrect
>you can threaten the bear and then pul the hammer back to let it know you’re serious
Do you think bears are skinchangers or something? Why would it understand English and the implications of a wienered gun?
>You can threaten the bear and then pull the hammer back so the bear knows you're serious.
thank you for that laugh anon but you really are moronic.
bears are well-known for having excellent taste in weaponry
Delete this at once
I'll do no such thing
Sometime in the 1990’s, Louisiana passed a law that extended the castle doctrine to your vehicle. The first time the law was applied was for my uncle. He shot some African American gentlemen of color who opened my uncles car door at a stoplight. The gun he used was a Judge. This isn’t a “my dad works at Nintendo” story; this shit really happened.
Very cool buddy!
>reliably stop a black bear?
Bro, my wife has chased a black bear up a tree with nothing but loud cussing and she's 5'7", 115 lbs. You don't need a gun for black bears.
>because bear protection is a good excuse to bring a gun. I'll have bear spray as well
Carry on then
>Those numbers!!!!
>I kneel.
> Nobears will touch you.
>those digits
I kneel. And your advice is sound. Frick all these stupid wannabe toughguy /k/homosexual larpers.
>muh rifle
>muh caliber
>muh have to be ready all the time even though I live in the suburbs with my mom
Great digits wasted on a discarded opinion
Absolute berrypicker
>convenient
no
>more reliable
definitely no
go away
Based opinion for the big digits. Black bears are basically big raccoons, they’re pretty much a non issue
t. mauled to death by a 400 lb black bear when least expected.
Mostly browns in Alaska.
You don't need to worry about bears till may in alaska.
They like sleeping.
Bring a gun in case you see a nice game animal.
Eating game will make life cheaper.
don't listen to the anons/undercover bears telling you not to worry about black bears
i don't think they have ever had to deal with brown bears before because their behavior is not too significantly different; you can also shoo off a brown bear in most cases
the majority of the time both bear species don't want to attack you but if you do something to bother them or if they happen to be in a bad mood they will attack you and win if you don't defend yourself
that being said 303 is enough for black bears if you can hit them and the chances of getting mauled if you aren't dumb around bears are pretty low
certain areas have more or less brown bears and bears can be awake at much earlier times of year than may, especially in the southeast which seems to be what op is describing
Anything can stop a bear. Depending on shot placement of course. 30-06 is the Alaskan Standard. But I’d be comfortable with most autoloaders of a variety of calibers.
.375 h&h is standard for people without baby arms
'alaskan standard' in my experience is a 12 gauge with brenneke slugs, which is why I brought that up in the OP and explained that I'm only going to be dealing with black bears.
I do have a 30-06 but it's several pounds heaver than that enfield sporter I posted and I don't want to lug it around everywhere
>black bear?
Black bears are big pusses. You could shoo them off with a broom.
you will only have a problem with black bears if you bring it upon yourself, and you dont need a gun to deal with them. they are big babies
I've deterred a black bear before by shaking a jar of sheet metal screws in its general direction and yelling "frick off"
Dropped one coming at me at a dead run at 50 yards with 6.5 Creedmoor. 303 will be fine.
>.303
based
it was good enough for the boers in s.a. lol
>WE CAUGHT THEM
>AND WE SHOT THEM
>UNDER RULE THREE OH THREE
Any .30 cal service rifle will be fine for black bear. I've hunted them with a .357 revolver, which hits no where near as hard as .303.
No, but bear spray will
Keep a side arm though
Bear spray is weaker than regular mace.
They shill spray so tourists can get mauled easier.
>so tourists can get mauled easier.
yes, kill your customers great idea! fricking bear paws typed that
>Bear spray is weaker than regular mace.
Are you sure about that?

Well me, I'm in Canada, so no guns, will bear bangers actually scare away bears? What about wearing a poncho that has been soaked in hot sauce?
...if I get lost, how do I fire the flare gun in a way that the rescue plane will see it, but I won't accidentally hit the rescue plane?
you can get guns in canada moron
there's a reason shotgun slugs are known as being "loaded for bear"
the more you know
Caliber does not matter as much as shot placement.
There was a pretty good report done of people who defended themselves against bear attacks with various calibers. calibers across all ranges had an over 80% success rate, teh lowest being 38 special which only had iirc 2 cases to report, 1 successfully killed the other did not but he survived.
Bears are not walking tanks, and bullets wont bounce off their skulls.
You can successfully defend yourself against a bear with even a 9mm.
I would suggest you take either .45, 40, or 10mm handgun to inflict maximum tissue damage and have enough ammo.
Shot placement is more important then caliber.
/k/tard here
ya youre good with a .303 assuming youve got experience with that rifle.
maybe invest in a nylon sidesaddle so you can carry a few extra rounds easily with it.
personally I would have just spent $250 on a Mav88, add afew accessories like a light to it and taken that.
also your bubbad rifle makes me sad :(, but eh use what youve got.
Black bears will not do shit buddy. They will run away from you.
Why are you replying to this thread? It reeks of bait. And there's 0 places with black bears in Alaska that don't also have brown bears.
>Black bears will not do shit
BS. Its not as common as Griz attacks but they do happen. At least 6 documented fatal black bear attacks since 2020:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal_bear_attacks_in_North_America
It's dangerous to go alone
Take this with you
