Basement gym

Why couldn’t I dig out a basement style hole in the ground, pour concrete, put up walls and a roof, and build a gym in this “basement space”?

Why does it need to be in a basement? Going underground puts extra strain on all materials touching dirt.

if you live somewhere where you need to ask you probably need a permit and it needs to be built to code.
if you don't have enforced building codes then why not just build it above ground for ease and convenience?

if you don't know how to dig a hole properly (safely) and it might collapse on you and buries you alive.
are you digging out in the open or under a structure?

Nothing, the government doesn't want you to know this but there are miles of free basement waiting to be dug under every building.
