Axes and hatchets

I needs some help. I got a hatchet recently. It was only a $50 thing so nothing super fancy, but it seemed like a good enough quality one. The head started coming loose so I re-hung it with a new wooden wedge and a new barrel wedge, and then I soaked it in mineral oil for a few days just to be sure. And then when I used it, the barrel wedge started popping out and the head got loose again.

I added a second wedge to the front of the axe head at an angle, and I think I must have been trying to split wood that was way too hard, but I'm worried that it's going to loosen up on me again and I'm running out of options. Should I try soaking it in linseed oil since, hypothetically, it will harden up eventually and not get squeezed out like the mineral oil?

        >We also believe that diversity enriches and we are therefore working actively on initiatives such as offering summer jobs to local young people, thereby contributing to the development of sparsely populated areas and offering placements to new arrivals, disabled people or other people who are often disconnected from the labour market.

Sounds fricked, you should probably replace the axe handle. This may help you.

That does seem quite helpful, although I'm probably best off just looking for a vintage hatchet at an estate sale or garage sale. My axe came from Amazon which means it's probably chinese, and if I'm going to replace the entire handle I might as well start with a better quality axe head.

I guess this should be a valuable lesson that looks can be deceiving and that just because an axe looks good and costs $50 doesn't mean I should expect it to hold up. I'll try soaking it in linseed oil to see if that improves it at all but I probably should be looking for a better axe / hatchet as my long term solution.

OP here. Today I bough some linseed oil and I'm giving the whole axe a soak in it. Here's hoping that keeps the wedges tight. I don't think superglue around the barrel wedge will do anything but I might give that or some 2-part epoxy a shot too once the linseed oil dries. I think the real important thing is making sure that the barrel wedge can't wiggle at all from vibrations, because as soon as it loosened up last time it just made the whole thing get worse and worse very quickly.

hatchets are the ultimate LARP tool. everyone getting into bushcraft buys one because they look cool and seem useful in theory, but they actually just suck at every task. need an axe? bring an axe. don't need an axe? a knife will do the job.

      Anonymous

I'll say it. You don't need an axe or a hatchet.

      >hatchet unnecessary
For me it's worth it. It chops firewood, doubles as a hammer and is also my best weapon of last resort if it should come to that. It's just 3 pounds. I'll save weight elsewhere.

I feel that wooden handles give an advantage for a once-in-a-15year eventuality, whereas Fiskars style one-piece composite handles trade that for a different once-in-a-15year eventuality. Both are good, but I prefer the Fiskars slightly.

Truth, Fiskars axes are so strong that they withstand years and years of abuse and neglect by conscripts (read: morons who have to be taught to tie their shoelaces). Motonet (hardware store chain in Finland) gives a 50 year warranty for the Fiskars axes they are selling.

What does the swing on a Fiskars axe feel like compared to a more conventional axe, where all the metal is in the axe head? The Norden N10 looks like it might be a good aspirational item for when I am ready for something a little bigger and more expensive than my Ned Foss hatchet.

            Anonymous

More vibration on impact, and the axe feels longer than it actually is. I have had all the premium brands, and I go back for my Fiskars pretty often. They are excellent tools. I've broken many wooden handles, but never a Fiskars.

Sounds great. I really like the kind of space-age-meets-middle-age look on it. I'm not really into composite handles so it looks like a good happy medium.

I found a hatchet in a house we were about to demolish. The head was loose, the handle was dry with flaking finish. I sanded it then soaked the whole handle in BLO for a week. After drying and a light sanding, the head is solidly attached and it has a nice finish.

      Anonymous

Yeah, I just finished soaking mine in BLO. I'm gonna let it dry for a week or two before I attempt whacking anything with it, but I'm hopeful that it's going to be nice and tight after that.

  13. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

Why does everyone use BLO instead of just regular linseed oil? Is it just because BLO dries faster? Because hat hardly seems worth it for covering the surface of a hand tool with literal poison. I know it wont kill you, but there is a reasonable chance it gives you cancer, or at the very least knocks off a few IQ points.

      >Is it just because BLO dries faster?
      It dries WAY faster

        Anonymous

Yes, I understand, that’s basically the entire point of it. Regular linseed oil takes about a month an a half to dry, but has the added bonus of not being made of toxic metals. Nobody seems to give a shit though, i find it odd. I have 2 axes, i put linseed oil on one and use the other. Switch every 2 months or so. Axes aren’t expensive and my handles feel way nicer than ones treated with BLO, and i know they wont give me cancer. Seems like a good investment of time and money. Why dont more people do it?
