My mom has alzheimer/dementia & suddenly forgot how to flush the toilet.
All I can think of is running a cable from the leaver down to the floor, then up along the door frame, then attaching it to the door, so anytime the door is opened it pulls the cable to flush the toilet.
Only other option I could find is this which seems like it's the only thing there is. >https://www.amazon.com/Ridgesun-Automatic-Touchless-Support-Batteries/dp/B0BKSC86LC/ref=sr_1_5?tag=ganker-20&crid=38AFLHMML4WAY&keywords=Automatic+Touchless+Toilet+Flush&qid=1707468950&s=hi&sprefix=automatic+touchless+toilet+flush%2Ctools%2C992&sr=1-5
Anyone know of any other options or ideas on how to make an auto flush without having to spend a ton of money ?
once consulted for a company that made auto-flushers.
i dont believe they sell retail, but i'm sure others do.
Found plenty like that but they are pricey & looks like would need a new bowl, piping, & maybe be hard wired.
those only work on commercial toilets. thanks for the pointless post.
Toilets are replaceable and bargains can be had from construction surplus. Bonus, many commercial shitters are long enough for dong clearance vs. cheap consumer crap that cramps the boiclit.
those autoflushers need a larger water line run to the toilet. They won't work on a 1/2" supply line that is commonly run to toilets in a home. They don't have a tank; it flushes with prodigious volume directly from it's supply.
The problem isn't picking up a longer commercial toilet, and we both know the length doesn't matter for our tiny wieners anyway.
tell me you know how commercial toilets work without knowing how commercial toilets work.
also, what this anon said:
you cannot use a commercial toilet in residential unless you have a large water supply and enough water pressure to meet the toilets operating needs. thats why they are designed for commercial use and not your shitty residential bathroom
Look up "touchless flush toilets". Commercial and civilian versions are plentiful and cheap. Not every commercial unit is like the old high flow American Standard etc at the ̶g̶l̶o̶r̶y̶ ̶h̶o̶l̶e̶ truck stop.

No need for a high dollar unit since it won't be used very long unless the patient can afford in-home caregivers (cheaper than a gummer storage facility depending on location but a hassle to manage).
Shitters are quite sophisticated these days.
>Shitters are quite sophisticated these days.
but that unit doesnt seem very appropriate as it's operated by intentionally waving your hand.
it'd need to be modified to include a movement detector, and some circuitry or a micro to add intelligence.
i'd use something like this i coz stole 4 dozen of them from work. it already includes some limited intelligence.
A pressure tank at the toilet would handle one shit at a time.
>how to make an auto flush
anon. it might not be long before she will have forgotten about the toilet altogether. Happened to my grandmother rather quickly.
Yeah that's what I'm worried about. It has progressed rather quickly every day is a question of how long will she be able to stay at home before she has to go into a facility.
I hate to tell you this, but they are going to absolutely demolish her holes once you put her in the facility. It's just the way it works.
If you have not arranged for full time care do that because even two fit young humans will get worn out caring for a dementia patient while trying to make a living and do necessary other tasks.
Sucks to watch those we love end their days but it sucks less for all concerned to admit the inevitable. knows
An automatic flusher is a cook upgrade but shortly all the old person assistance gear you/she has will be irrelevant to her care. I saved all the gear from my wife and father (sis managed my mothers care and mom was in a nice facility until the end, finding those takes study and reddit is the optimal place to ask caregivers what to look for) since that shit's expensive and I don't believe in renting.
This being DIY, if she owns a patient lift, oxygen cylinders, an oxygen concentrator, a power recliner, a walker etc hang onto them as they're multiple use and won't be getting cheaper. Neither will hospital beds which are worth keeping to use.
If I ever enter the dementia/alzheimer's decline, I will delete myself before I put my family though years of pain.
So will I and for myself. I've attended the dying and the idea of wanting company for my death is horrible. My heart attack didn't scare me at all, it was merely painful and annoying.
Death is useful and inevitable, a mercy to the old because if your body doesn't kill your mind that mind will torture itself indefinitely. My parents and wife had advanced directives self and sister ensured were carried out. Make sure you have your documentation in order ASAP if you do not already or the medical establishment may be forced to preserve you in the limbo of insanity and suffering.
You can set up an IR system. If your mother has dementia she would be needing personal assistance though.
Everyone in this thread is overthinking the problem.
Just put an actuator on the flush handle and set up a timer for every 2 hours. Auto flush every 2 hours during the day. Done.
Put a pressure sensor under the seat that flushes when pressure is lifted for 5 continuous seconds so fidgeting wont activate it. Shouldnt be hard without microcontrollers.
