        EOD.
Actually a pretty genius idea to use smaller dogs, since their low weight can help in not accidentally setting off pressure based mines.

In Soviet Ukraine after the war dogs became a delicacy because of the lack of meat. cats were referred to as roof rabbits yet were commonly avoided due to parasites.
When the USSR collapsed and Ukraine solidified, they passed laws banning the sale of dog meat and the dog markets that surrounded that trade.
In the west today, you receive a considerable fine for being caught in possession of dog meat.

This doesn't sound true, but if it is, chalk that up to another horror of the evils of communism. Also daily reminder that intercepted Russian calls include soldiers saying they have eaten dogs in preference to their ration packs.

Eating the only meat available isn't an evil of communism. I mean what are we gonna eat here in the cities if WW3 kicks off and the trucks stop. Imagine feeding Los Angeles for six months with no supply lines. Will not be pretty.

its called crushing poverty, Anon. And yes, its often, though not exclusively associated with communism. During the war and for some time after it ended, my polish grandfather used to hunt pigeons and crows with a sling, becase that was the only available meat for city poorgays at that time. I found out about it accidentally, when one day in early 2000s, he brought home a wounded pigeon, promptly broke its neck, defeathered it and cooked it in a rather thin and bland broth. He was in his 80s, and starting to develop mild senility, I guess old habit just kicked in.

I have family that starved to death in Germany in the last few years of the war. There was no supply, they ate the bark off the trees.
During this time however israeli prisoners were miraculously able to be fed and transported by railcar to places in Poland. You see the allies bombed and destroyed all the railways but the Nazis wanted to kill the israelites so bad they fixed the rails and shipped them to Poland. No supplies were coming in to Germany but they shipped israelites to Poland.
Then they held them in camps and gassed them in little rooms with wooden doors randomly while they were fed and the wehrmacht starved to death.
          Funny how history works.
