Are crossbows?

I was looking into getting a crossbow to have fun in my backyard and plink some stuff. Never used one before however. Is this a good purchase for 45 dollars? Any of you guys hunt or own crossbows?

I would buy that for 45$. I'm in the thread this anon mentioned. I got my first crossbow at a pawn shop and have taken deer with it. What do you want to know? Crossbows are fun and much more forgiveable than a compound or recurve and I would say are the working man's bow. If you show bow & arrow you need to practice alot. With my crossbow the 1-3 weeks a year I'm able to get out and go hunt its easy I just aim, safety off, fire.

nice anon! I traded a pot grow light (8 bulb T5) for this Centerpoint Heat. I haven’t shot it yet. But we are going soon. I figured I got the better end of the deal.

You cant kill anything big with it with anything less than 3 shots. Its slow to reload too. Maybe good for small game and that's about it. Terrible self-defense weapon.

Has anyone claimed they're a self defense weapon since the advent of gunpowder? Hell even before that, they were only really utilized in warfare, and even then only either with melee infantry to cover them or when fighting in a siege.

Its terrible for self defence in the sense that you'd have to bear with the screams and agony of the person you shot. That death rattle will be forever implanted in your memories.

A fricking pistol crossbow with broadheads will kill a hog at close range. An actual compund crossbow will go through riot shields. An arrowdhead is closer to a knife than a bullet.

Crossbows are heavy, loud, and unwieldy. A bow is a much better option for anybody who is willing to take the time to learn how to use it.

      Anonymous

      >the time to learn how to use it
      Which is a huge commitment.
It takes years to use a bow effectively.
Everything could happen within these years. Society could collapse.
I´m not saying don´t do it, a bow can be deadly and effective in the right hands, but one should have a crossbow for SHTF Situations.

No it's not. Start with a youth bow, get the reps in, then pick up a proper 60lb bow. Spend ~1 hour a day in your back yard and you'll have it down in no time. That said, if you want to be the most effective with the least effort, just get a gun for minmax.

I own a $130 crossbow because my dad works in a outdoor recreation company. Effective accurate range is 30 yds avg with most of them. They all have different fps as well. For the guy claiming you need three shots to take down anything big, he doesn't own one more has he looked up the different options for them. They have tips called "mechanical tips" that are basically Bat-a-rangs on the end of the bolt and bladed wings spring out on impact. Ive seen them splay full grown boars open. However the reload mechanism of a crossbow is it's biggest drawback compared to a gun or a bow. My model has a stirrup you put your full into and a pull cable that resets the string.. with practice I can do it quickly but I wouldn't rely on it in the heat of the moment. Other models you can install a wind crank on it but this also takes a bit of time compared to drawing a bow back.

Crossbows are cool but have you ever used a stone sling?

      Anonymous

Slings can be crazy deadly if you put in the practice, same with slingshots. People think of them as nothing but toys, but slings and slingshots are still very effective weapons especially for small game hunting in forests.

        Anonymous

hunting in the forest AND used as weapons against people as well. The Sling needs a lot of practice to hit small game but it would obliterate anything small it hits. People don't understand the amount of power projectiles have snapping out of that pouch and flying hundreds of feet away. I wonder if for that purpose you'd be better off filling the pouch with a bunch of mid size pebbles like "shot" instead of one stone. In terms of having to use it as a weapon against attackers, I'd rather have a gun but if there's nothing else, if you can hit a person anywhere from their shin to their shoulder with a slung stone you will put them on the ground. I read something on YT about an American soldier stationed in africa who watched a bunch of kids go up against adult men and drop them with a sling.

          > I wonder if for that purpose you'd be better off filling the pouch with a bunch of mid size pebbles like "shot" instead of one stone.

I don't know a thing about slings (or slingshots mind) but isn't the point of the sling to accelerate a single accurate 'moderately sized/weighted projectile'? Could the centrifugal force produce enough of a weighted swing with enough smaller projectiles?
Plus you'd probably miss next to all of your shots without any choke or barrel (consider a shotgun and its barrel) at any significant range. >tl;dr
I havn't a clue what I'm talking about, I doubt quantity over wieght/single-shot works, invest in pocket-sand otherwise.

            Anonymous

If you have a non-slotted pouch and filled it up with knuckle sized rocks and threw it at 15 feet you might have a decent "shot" for hunting I think. It would certainly be unpleasant to be hit by those as a person too. But yeah the main point is to use one stone and really frick up someone's day.

          >hunting in the forest AND used as weapons against people as well.
Their primary use was defending a herd of animals against predators. For a big animal it's more of a "go away, I'm not worth eating" they were used in ancient militaries because all the farm boy recruits had already mastered or almost mastered using them. I make them with duct tape and 550 cord, they are fun. But for hunting, traps will always be more effective, and for self defense, a gun will always be more effective. For getting a lion away from your goat herd, a sling is ideal.

What's a good pistol crossbow that I can strap to my backpack?

      Anonymous

Good for what? I got a horizone redback at work for fun in quiet times but pistols even the 80lb ones are toys. I've seen some chinkshit compound ones claiming to have 120lb but I haven't seen it IRL let alone fired one

        Anonymous

Maybe pistol crossbows are just LARP then. I was thinking it'd be a good option for an emergency hunting tool but if it's not strong enough to kill a sustenance-sized animal then I'd probably be better off with a gun.

A crossbow seems like a better survival weapon than a gun just because it's silent and the ammunition can be retrieved and re-used. I'm not a hunter though and I'm probably never going to find myself in a situation where I am desperate enough for a meal that I have to poach game.

youd probably get way more use out of a small/takedown 22lr rifle and a brick of 22 than a crossbow and 6 bolts

            Anonymous

My dad has one of those, they're pretty awesome. perfect size for sticking into a backpack, albeit you have to take the time to assemble it before you can use it in an emergency.

          >and the ammunition can be retrieved and re-used
Sure, if you find it without a metal detector. I've lost an arrow while I was in the local archery club. It glanced off the edge of the target disc and flew into 1 foot tall grass. 5 people and a metal detector and we still couldn't find it.
Also, bolts and arrows can break. If they're carbon, you're going to have a fun time with sharp shrapnel buried into your skin and eyes.

(Cross)Bows are for hobby. If you want to hunt or defend yourself, get a gun.

paracord with the core still inside is stiff
        paracord that is gutted isn't.

I get really nice accuracy with the gutted ones unless the stones are tennis ball sized, then the stiffer paracord one is good

Not that I'm in the market for a crossbow but it seems to me that the best design would be one with a reverse prod, as the weight is towards the back and over the handle, thus closer to the body.

I've shot a buddy's conventional crossbow (a TenPoint brand) and found it VERY front-heavy and unbalanced.

The only good thing about crossbows is that they make good poaching weapons. Crossbows aren’t archery and shoot much more like a gun. With a proper broadhead and shot placement, they will absolutely kill any animal in North America. Learn to shoot a compound bow, that way at least you’ll be a man.

If you're serious about getting a crossbow I would do more research. I don't know how big your backyard is but you probably would over penetrate a fence if you missed your intended (and appropriate target). If you're just gonna screw around in your backyard you might as well get a cheap hand crossbow.

You didn't ask about this but food for thought you can hunt with a crossbow. There are regulations depending on where you live where it might not be allowed for archery hunts without some sort of exception (like a disabled hunter's permit).

Where I'm from, the only time you can use a crossbow is rifle season, which means it's merely an alternative for felons who are prohibited from owning firearms.
