Since we have reliable temperature controllers do you think there is a way to make a more reliable heater? That is waterproof, doesn't release toxic metals on failure, doesn't shock you to death, doesn't require glass enclosures.
Maybe like a big array of electronic components that is similar to a LED but doesn't emit light and you can keep it on at night? Redundancy would be great too.
I know you can use pumps but that wouldn't really produce enough heat for people who have big tanks and live in cold places.
I have an chinesium Amazon heater that's been quite good. Even turned off when the water got low and the friend watching my place was not smart enough to top up. Most of the fish died as a result, not the heater's fault... now I have guppies that keep having babies.
This shit had been solved since the 1960s. A simple mechanical thermostat driving a nichrome heater coil built into a large borosilicate glass testtube-shaped housing hanging in from the edge.

Aquarium water heaters have been super reliable forever. If you really need a backup, grab a second heater and run 2 smaller heaters so the second one can run it if the first dies at least warm enough for you to see the thermometer is a little too low later in the day.
Assuming you’re feeding them twice a day, it’s pretty easy to tell if something is off, there will be a big difference when you lift the lid if the thing fails and you’re into the low 70s vs regular tropical temps around 80 vs malfunctioning heater that’s always on and gets above 85.
until they leak toxic stuff and either immediately kill your entire tank or, even after a water change, everything dies after a few days
if you're unlucky the cable will also catch on fire and again poison everything
happened to me with a very expensive model and I've seen it happen to a lot of random people

Where are you buying shit from? I sold aquariums to people for 5 years and had 3-4 tanks going and maybe I heard once about a tank heater getting too hot. Something is messed up if you’re cracking the glass tube they’re in.
I mean I bet there’s a way to get a temp sensor and stick some halogen light above the tank that goes on/off at certain temps, but you’re still going to have failure spots.

I run two of these in my tanks because when they break they don't explode glass into the tank and it doesn't create a nice circuit in my tanks if that were to happen. But I learned the hard way, my tank wasn't grounded but I was. Touched the water and immediately knew what happened and unplugged the heater. Fortunately I was the only casualty
This post really hurts me to read. If you're breaking your heater it's because you bought Chinese shit, or you're letting the water level go below the glass so the temp difference between the air and water causes it to break. Stop being a fricking noob with your aquarium.

The brand that killed the tank rhymes with frugal and it costs a lot. It was fully submerged, angled, package and product was intact. I showed pictures of how I was using it, said I used it correctly and they refunded me.
