MiGs can also be had at affordable prices but the real killer is keeping them airworthy and fueled

Migs have been almost impossible to get in the US for years now due to importation bans, good luck finding a cheap one

L-29/39s have been available for decades in the US dude, the problem is their steep maintenance and fuel costs.

        >Migs have been almost impossible to get in the US for years now due to importation bans
Nope, it was the US Military buying up all the privately owned ones and using them as aggressor squadrons and target practice.

Zero chance you would be able to fly this without getting shot down by F-35s.

Just a note, cheap to buy does not mean cheap to own. This plane likely needs a half million dollar overhaul, then it will need to be inspected, certified, hangared and insured. The cost per hour operation is likley going to atleast be a couple grand.

So, yes, you CAN buy a jet aircraft for the price of a honda civic. But you ain't gonna be able to do anything with it until you sink a considerable amount of money and time into it.

Planes are hideously expensive to run. It'll cost you at least a much as that per year if you run it for 50 hours a year.

Yeah, I fly a Cessna 171 to keep my license current. Runs me about $150 an hour to operate. Something like an L-39 is going to run you about $2,000 an hour in operating cost. I fly about 40 to 50 hours a year. That runs me about $6000 to $7500 a year.

Flying an L39 albatross the same amount of hours would cost $100,000 a year.

        what about storage/hanger costs?

Cost per hour figures typically are a combined total that divides the cost of all money spent on the plane by hours operated. These obviously fluctuate a bit with the hours you actually operate it for, but not much. This is because if you don't operate it at all you are still paying for annual maintenance, inspections, hangar space, insurance etc etc. Also, every aircraft has a limit on total hours it can be operated in between major overhauls and total overhauls. Operating for a lot of hours doesn't necessarily drop price per hour as much as you'd think because you will just hit your time for a mandatory overhaul and now you are sinking money into your plane again.

tl:dr, cost per hour to operate does fluctuate a bit, but is a general average for the total cost spent on the plane divided by the hours operated.

If you play in those leagues, buy a hangar at the air park where you live.

The people who own and really fly this stuff live aviationist lives where that is not very difficult (for example running successful aviation businesses) or are very wealthy. They don't ask on PrepHole because they would never need to.

Honestly, being a pilot and knowing a few exactly like that, old warbird jets are still pretty difficult for the majority of people to pull off. Most of the civilian owned fighter jets aren't owned by individuals, but by companies that rent them out, use them for air shows, etc etc. I knew a group of doctors, lawyers, engineers and whatnot who pooled resources to buy a jet. After 2 years they were desperate to get rid of it as it was burning through their money even faster than it burned through fuel and hydraulic fluid. They each maybe managed to clock like 3 or 4 hours with it before having to sell it.

When you see a cheap jet, it usually means somebody thought they could play with the big boys then realized that no, they really DON'T want to drop half a mil on keeping a plane flying that they are barely even qualified/capable of piloting.

Its just such an expensive brag to pull off, and most millionaires didn't get rich by dropping money on stupid shit like a plane they can only afford to fly a couple hours a year.

Also, most of those jets have pretty pathetic stats when it comes to flight endurance and range. You can just forget about luggage. Most millionaires will get some cessna or piper twin engine piston bird and use it to go on vacations and stuff. Honestly, if you have real big boy money and want to show off thats how you do it the smart way.

Oh, I forgot to add that jet aircraft hours of operation are very high because:

1: They burn A TON of fuel per hour. An L39 will burn anywhere from 100 to 120 gallons of jet fuel per hour. Jet fuel is averaging about $6 a gallon currently.

2: Jet engines require maintenance and repairs more frequently. The cost of jet engine parts are substantially higher than piston engines.

3: Finding an aviation company that even has mechanics familiar with and certified to work on an exotic aircraft like an L-39 is difficult. This equates to not only more hours spent on maintenance as mechanics have to work with a plane they do not routinely work on, but the company performing said work is going to charge substantially more.

So yeah. Cost per hour on even a very small, very simple jet is going to be astronomically higher than a regular piston engine aircraft.

I don't wish to own fancy things, only to set my people free. Consider the current existence of trained and qualified pilots and drone operators in our nation's military that would call themselves patriotic, or Patriots, openly or otherwise.
