anyone ever been scammed by a contractor?

anyone ever been scammed by a contractor?
i had a guy out here to give me an estimate on some work, i told him I have home owners insurance that will cover the repairs, but the repair man insisted that I file my insurance claim the DAY they start working, and that he was going to "work to give me the biggest refund' after I paid him out of pocket first.
wtf is this? sounds like a scam. the guy was from a quite large contractor company.
i ended up not working with them, had an insurance agent come out, look at the issue, and wrote me a check for a 3rd of what the first guy asked. i called another guy to come out and do the repairs, and he ended up charging $400 over the check I was given. my insurance provider cut me another check for the over charge.
was the first guy trying to scam me?
if so, i wouldnt mind leaving a negative review, and report them to whoever.

Some industries like roofers often have someone in the office that specializes in processing insurance claims and they do know how to increase payout.

If he came off as too slimey, he might have been, and you would have been responsible for any difference anyway.

      >anyone ever been scammed by a contractor?

That is basically the process - you get the estimate, contact insurance and they either 1) OK it, 2) send someone out to inspect. You wouldn't want to do the work, and THEN file - because you can get screwed. One exception might be if the work needs to be done immediately, like water damage or something.

      As
said, they should work directly with the insurance company as needed.

It sounded like he needed the work, and was basically telling you he would make sure the amount got covered. That's a big promise, and he might have been telling the truth. But that's a trust issue.

Everyone always scams insurance jobs. If one singular house in a neighborhood gets storm damage, the roofers will often ask to inspect neighbors homes “for free”. While up there they’ll go ahead and knock your roof with a welders hammer, inform you of the catastrophic storm damage and then bill you (your insurance) 300% of what it actually costs to fix it. No way of knowing what kind of lies or bullshit were going on in this case. You do sound a bit histrionic and reactive though so maybe you’re just a b***h and the contractor was innocent. Comes with the territory when you can’t fix things yourself. It’s why you always get a few quotes on things like this

Yeah our guy basically did this and get us a whole new roof, which insurance paid for. I mean who gives a frick if they overcharge and insurance pays for it. As long as you aren't on the hook for it. Lots of contractors are scum, some are stupid, some have drug habits to pay for - it's not like you have to be a good person to do roofing.

brah, the work is done. i only paid my deductible.
i just wanna know if the first guy was trying to scam me. is it a known scam? is there a name for it?

      >is it a known scam? is there a name for it?

It's not a scam, it just isn't smart for you to do it that way.

Asking a question is b***hing? Even if they are b***hing about it, that isn’t histrionic. Your posts sound like projecting to me.

    Never been scammed
    >do everything myself

In 10 or so years of running my own company, rarely making anyone sign a quote or work order or wtv, I've only not been paid once, and it was after fixing another contractors frick ups. The dude was in way over his head, getting sued by the homeowner and then just dipped out of the country back to Albania iirc.

I got scammed by a moving company once and they didn't deliver my stuff until I got a hold of the FBI who payed them a visit. I got my shit the next Monday, 76 days after they picked it up when it was contracted to be delivered 3 days.

I used to work for a guy who made a living fricking people over. I've also taken a bath on a few neighbor tim specials but that's kind of on purpose, it's important to be on good terms with your neighbors.

Anyway, always get more than one opinion, and yes every one that comes out will get you to cut a check that day. If you're going through insurance they're going to scam the insurance company, because the insurance is trying to scam you and them as well. It's a very parasitic relationship.
