Even if we assume suicide surface drones that are simply used as a launch platform (doesn't matter if drone survives the launch) that would require sailing one down the Don river, which is in Russia, as going through the Kerch strait most likely isn't an option.

Really wierd. Russia has friend-or-foe transponders, both legacy from the USSR and newer systems. I wonder if they’ve been hacked resulting in the Russians just turning them off and leading to inevitable friendly-fire situations.

how is it less bad? because if the russians were to be believed somewhere in Ukraine an S-300/400 crew has gone AWOL and has shot down dozens of jets and hundreds of millions of dollars and the russians are powerless to stop them.

It's not just about IFF transponders.
AFAIK any barely passable radar can tell altitude, velocity, vector, size, turbine count and power.
What could be low, slow, large, 4 turbine and, on top of it all, fly in pre-determined routes and time frames... in the very same airspace where they already shot one low, slow, large, 4 turbine aircraft, flying predetermined routes and time frames, that turned out to be an A50???

        Anonymous

Or maybe russian radars can only tell if something IS or ISN'T there and it's the methanol concentration in the ADs operator that determines everything else.

Idk, not sure, but it seems more plausible with every friendly fire incident.

You can clearly see the 1st missile go for a flare. Why would a patriot missile bite off on flares though? It's radar guided. Maybe IRIS-T sneaking around? I bet it can do way beyond published figures for big lumbering targets like the A-100, in clear weather.

Russia officially has 9 A-50M's, with two losses (three if you count the droned one as lost) they're down to either 6 or 7. They also have two A-100's. So they have 11 total, but only 6-7 active after losses right now.

Of the 2 A-100s, one is a testbed platform which isn't intended for frontline service, and it's unclear what the readiness of the second one is.

                Anonymous

The A-100 only just made its first flight, probably with a test payload, it's a long long way before it can carry any sensors and if it does the likelihood of it actually improving on the A-50's electronic performance is low

the GlobalEye seems to be top tier too
UAE already bought it and France and Greece are interested

This could be friendly fire because one of the missiles hits a flare. Terminal IR homing is generally a feature of Russian missiles not western ones (unless someone gave the Ukes Skyceptor).

      Anonymous

SM-2/SM-2ER do so it's not like it's particularly uncommon in the west, even more so if you include the israelites but that's beside the point. It could just be that the countermeasure program releases both flares and chaff, that's fairly common. One missile fuses early quite a bit behind the plane and at a point where the flares had already cooled down, that could've been it flying through a chaff cloud and triggering on it.

tbh as a prior chairforce boyo, not really a high chance of this being the case. The paper stats of around 160km max range is false(max range listed isn't for optimal launches and not just to confuse the enemies or undersell it's capabilities), and highhhhhhh alt/high speed launches can go a lot farther in general but I do not think this is an aim120d going 220km unless they lobbed a AMRAAM-ER since 280s aren't out of prod staging.

Either this is a patriot or something else.
In my opinion a f16/f15e/c going mach frick at high alt might, MIGHT be able to push a 120d on a closing path AOA at 220kms on an awacs due to it being a slow big ass bird, But at that point they'd be spotted or at least identified. It'd also need to rely on the ziggers being moronic(high likelyhood I know) and keep flying a direct path into it during pitbull till it goes active.
          >inb4 muh eagles only a2g role morons roll in with 0 understanding of the bird

They fired a HARM on it

I don't think we gave them the G models, plus the first hit went into backup ir mode and smacked a flare, agm88s don't do that. However I'd love to know the feasibility of smacking an awacs in general with HARMS.

Russian sources claim a Patriot system has been destroyed.

First missile impact, they're probably dropping chaff too or a combi set, but they don't really *poof* like that.

Just because UK let a moronic missile launch/failure slide (Russia would just have denied and then apologised and called it a technical failure or something, any overt action would make UK look overly sensitive and belligerent), doesn't mean that France needs to.

The thing is, "-stan" people love to move to russia. And russian business&government love to have them come to russia - they take any job for low pay, they know even less about laws and rights than russians even if they move legally, and they breed like wienerroaches. Which causes some butthurt in russians of nationalistic leaning, and here's an example of such butthurt - "see, not everyone can be replaced by "foreign specialists" whom you love so much, dear government".

              It's fairly simple really.
              >Person who has no idea how guns work draws a gun by copying a few parts they think look cool and slapping them together
Noguns don't know or care how guns actually function, as long as it looks cool and/or scary it's good enough for their fictional work.

I prefer to believe that the artist was taking the piss. There's no way you study guns enough to draw that detail on cylinders and magazines and not understand how they work.
They clearly knew what they were drawing, which makes it a decision and not an error.

There's a spring in the back and every time it fires the propellant makes it spin which picks up a new round and on the return stroke fires again with the new round. Those indentations are not milled weight saving sections, but holes to take up the round that close when they spin away from the feeding mechanism.
There is another mechanism on the other side of the gun that pushes out the spent cartridge.
The gun is actually in .22, which is why they can fit in the feed in the handle so easily

I think I can see how it could work. The magazine/cylinder combo reminded me of a tround configuration that does something a bit like that. Ignore trounds now but this has been done in prototype I believe so it's workable if pointless.

Create a feeding mechanism to feed from the magazine into the empty chamber of the cylinder at the bottom of the cycle. This could be done from the front maybe.
Then have the cylinder rotate as usual, firing position is in the 12 o'clock. The cylinder rotates, driven by some gas/piston mechanism which feeds the action also.
As the bullet gets to about 10 o'clock (facing away from the reader), it's ejected at that point. This leaves the chamber empty for the magazine to fill.

The side charging handle is used to manually feed a round and cycle the cylinder in the absence of gas.

Homie, it's a part, not the full wreckage, not every single broken off piece catches on fire, that's usually fuel, munitions, and battery storage going up in flames. Ripped off wings can catch fire, but due to the open giant fricking hole usually any/all gas is gone by the time it hits the ground.
Birds that go boom generally have a 10 mile+ area where parts rain down in various sizes and density depending on altitude and how it goes down.
Some have a RUD event and it's more concentrated especially at lower altitudes, others not so much.

Likely got ripped off on the way down by overspeed. That section wouldn't have fuel in it.

Yes but also no, the expensive parts are the radar and computing hardware, but the only people capable of spending that kind of money on those things (IE: Western governments) don't want them, however I bet you'd get a sweet payday for some of the hard drives, encrypted communications equipment, etc. But in that case they'd be paying for the information, not the hardware itself.

They do have quite a good radar so they'd know a missile is coming in and probably know a bit about what type too. Then it's just a matter of spamming countermeasures while trying to hit the deck I guess.

I... I... am at a loss for words here.

Before the war I bought into all the Russian propaganda, after all they looked like they started taking their army seriously in the 2010s while Europe was still fat and lazy since the 1990s. Of course, it made sense, in numbers they had bucketloads of stuff, in quality they were modernizing and even admitting that they couldn't outright compete with NATO, I just kept reading things about trying to compete in less conventional areas like EW, ground based AA, cyber... whilst modernizing the structure of the army, I still remember that article extolling the BTGs as something that optimized the current Russian forces for effect in Crimea and adequately coordinated paramilitaries like local support and wagner.

I saw the west like a bunch of pansies incapable of being committed to their own defense and deserving of anything that happened due to the sheer neglect.

Now, 1 day to go to the 2º year of the 2 days military operation that has destroyed Russian military credibility in any sense, wrecked its economy, made every battle a Verdun for little gain and has turned Russia into a bigger shithole for no gain at all, I hear that they have lost another AWACS. Mind you that A50s are almost hand made lost soviet technology, every single one lost is close to a piece of soviet artisanship(even if lackluster) that will be forever lost to history, and they haven't lost 1 but 2.

Every single fricking Russian should burn in agony in a lake of fire for this.

Honestly it could be anything but the Russians have a bad habit of lying. They are claiming they shot down their own plane again and I just don't buy it. For a Russian it's better to appear to be an idiot than to give a victory, no matter how small, to your enemy.

I guess, but there is an extreme limit to how many Patriot missiles they have. We know it hasn't been a large amount.

I guarantee Uncle SAM is going to give the airplane's weight in missiles for a catch like this. Russians have like 6 modernized AWACS in total, and that's official numbers. Pays for itself!

Because Russians said that it was friendly fire, which automatically means its wasn't

Because every time the Russians "shoot down their own shit" its a cover by the Ministry of Defense for Ukrainians shooting it down dumbass

What makes Russians colonial is the fact that they keep saying that Russians being in places is justification to invade and further colonize those places, and they keep inserting Russians into more and more places. 1+1.

Yet that argument didn't exist in regards to the UK and their empire. I guess the UK weren't colonialists despite the British Empire being the reason the concept of colonialism exists.

Anyway, you mean like how Americans argued Texas was theirs? Like that?

            >[Whataboutism Intensifies]
Russia is an empire that still follows an imperial follow, with a metropole (Moscow and St. Petersburg) extracting wealth and resources to fuel a high standard of living at the expense of the colonies (everywhere else) who have dirt roads and outdoor toilets and where the people are considered second class citizens implicitly and sometimes explicitly.
Nowhere else follows this model. There is zero, ZERO equivalance to Spain, the United Kingdom or the USA.
Now go and have a nice day tankie/vatnik scum.

You call me a communist vatnik but I'm not the one making communist arguments, you little spergy nerd.

Besides, how does Scotland and Belfast compare to London again? Or New York, Washington DC, Boston to Missouri, Michigan or Tennesse? Or French Guiana to Paris?

They are very much nicer than London. London's a shithole.

Places like Ann Arbor and Knoxville are nicer than NYC or DC.

I'm not a homosexual leftist so I know you're all correct but here's what I would say if I was someone hanging things that happened more than 300 years ago over people's heads to say someone is imperialist:

That's not what the data says. And then I'd post charts and graphs of economic and financial data comparing those places. I think we know what they would show...

I know this because all these arguments are as old as Queen Victoria.

London is all about stealing the rest of the English and other foreign counties wealth, but that's just the banking clique and the taxman.
The local territories like Scotland get far more concessions than the average person in England does from London.
The cities are also nicer arguably, cleaner too. The only thing London has is more elites, immigrants, cheap labour, and things to do. Ultimately it's like comparing Tokyo, a hellscape with lots of stuff to do, with some of the nicer smaller cities. Being mad that higher concentrations of elite people and labour is more efficient at making money and are thus stealing all the money, despite places Oxford and bath and the like being way nicer because they are avoiding the issues of living in major cities while benefitting from proximity, doesn't make Russian basically fricking anyone not in Moscow the same.

Moscow is an oil state, stealing its own wealth and suppressing it's own people, the cities ultimately don't matter, nor does societal progress, the only thing that matters is controlling the narrative through mass media and making sure there is an existential foreign enemy to fight, economics do NOT matter to these elites because they can directly barter oil money for yachts regardless of how well the country is doing as long as the serfs do not revolt.

They use the democratic elites as justification for democratic failings as propaganda, but noone ever talks about greedy Russian oligarchs controlling Russian policy, throwing precious lives away for ideological dreams of pointless imperialism and personal idolatry that doesn't ever align with its people, because their news networks are becoming China tier controlled they will always assume the west has it worse even if it isn't because RT said so.

If it was friendly fire they would have said it went down due to mechanical failure or something

Can't exactly do that when the aircraft was popping flares

Never underestimate the human capacity to deny blatant fact when it is inconvenient, especially when there is a genuine risk of harm to the one who accepts the fact instead. Besides, maybe malfunctioning of mechanic result in flares fall out of plane, da?

No, that was the plane suspected to have been shot down alongside the last A-50 but it seemed to have made it down to the ground safe-ishly, only with serious damage and fatalities aboard.

Today is a whole new A-50.

I'm sorry, A-50 crew, but you're reeds now.
