    >How can I keep healthy while working on a trade?
Come to terms with the fact you will die early in a body that has serious chronic aches and pains.
Itll make your brain a lot healthier in the short term, not worrying about the inevitable horrors you will face.

    1. Don't smoke. Smoking and trades is worst combination you can think off. It's like a shit catalysator on your health.
    2. Do cardio like bicycling, HIIT or swimming to prevent one-sided stress on your joints and to keep flexible
    3. Get decent respiratory tools (FP2 is enough for most cases) and treat electricity, height other hazards like welding with proper respect

do not do cardio if you want to live long. High intensity work out is enough.

    0. get out of trade

    failing that:

    1. get plenty of sleep, massages, water, no drugs (including nicotine and alcohol)
    2. do everything at 50% of your ability and speed, max
    3. wear every possible PPE
    4. have someone else do it. abuse the frick out of the young guys who are desperate to show off how strong and tough they are

From my grandad sat with me atm:

    >i quite enjoyed doing my trade
    >quite enjoyed running the business
    >just enjoy doing a good job
    >proper job
    >getting paid for doing it
    >well, when you were actually doing the job, you didn't have any aches and pains, it's when you stopped
    >that's when the pain started

no word on how to cope with pain. just deal with it. family to provide for, i'm assuming.

move to the white collar side as soon as possible, the trade is fun whilst you're young but when you get to your 30s you'll appreciate the extra money, possible progression and not wrecking your body further

Im looking to eventually do this.
Where do i go from manufacturing machine repair to get into white collar jobs

I did the opposite. Trades pay more and you don't have to deal with blue haired trainnies in HR mandating you announce your pronouns in your email footer. If you're aging poorly stop drinking and smoking and sleep properly, our bodies are made to work.

This. Lots of tradies stay up long and get up at 5 every day anyway. That way their body will recover and heal poorly from all the strain it's under, leaving them with all sorts of chronic issues eventually.

    Eating healthy can't be understated.
Cook for yourself and bring your own lunches.
Lots of dudes who work trades who's diet consists of fast food drive thrus and convenience stores and wonder why their bodies are being wrecked when others are not kills me.
Got to take care of yourself

Would taking an ice bath every night or every other night help? Along with all the other stuff mentioned so far

      Anonymous

I guess you need to treat a day at work like having done some exercise, and follow the recovery protocols of professional athletes.

That would be stretching and occasional massages along with diet ect.

Remember that Cold/ice bathes are employed as part of a greater recovery routine for exercise. Evidence is mixed but probably does favour better recovery just don’t over do it.
Anecdotally I think athletes who can handle ice baths really do like them

There have been a few large threads like this already. Don’t have the links unfortunately, hopefully a good anon can link!

    - take PPE and OSHA serious unless you want to acquire ‘that injury’ in your early thirties. Including stuff like ear protection

    - bring a healthy packed lunch, depending on the job most traders travel a lot and end up buying absolute trash from the nearest corner shop for lunch.

    - unironically take up yoga or at least a light stretching routine before bed. I’ve heard yoga was basically made by Indian peasant farmers to stop them keeling over on their of age and continue work

    - if you can still find time to do light exercise during the week or atleast something productive other than work, again I know guys who just get home and crash on an armchair after work.

    - literally just stop after 25 years and start consulting or a small business if you have the capital. Maybe find a niche beforehand.

Hi there! I am looking for assistance in making a humidor cabinet and lining it with spanish cedar and using dovetails instead of wood screws. I hope I am in the correct place as I was sent here by Mr. Jokr and there was a pink background instead of a blue one in the previous thread I was in.

This really is excellent. You, sir, should pay no mind to that young whippersnapper. He lost his manners.
First thing you have to do is decide how many dove tails you want per side then at what angle you want them to be. The dovetail is such a great joint because the shape adds extra surface area and thus creates more friction on the wood. I remember this one time my dove was sliding at such an angle the friction was amazing! My wood was rubbed on all sides and it was really tight. it almost burst.
Once you have your plans you can cut the dovetails. Make sure not to remove too much material (underestimate the amount you have to remove at first). Try a test fit. You can easily obtain angle measurements online.
          Good luck oldtimer.

You do not. Trade work is the antithesis of a healthy work environment

It's hard, I'll give you that. I've personally found that being healthy is usually met by insults or teasing in the trades. I remember once I brought a salad to go with my lunch. The guys in the shop don't do 'vegetables' and never let me forget it by nicknaming me 'Caesar.' Cool nickname until you find out where it came from, and was ceremoniously rekindled as my nickname every fricking day with "What, no salad today, Caesar?" or "Haw haw it's Caesar's favorite day! Salad day!" Tbh it wasn't that bad, but when you're already having a bad day because of some work bs the teasing can get to you. And others had it way worse than me, so it was kept in perspective.
    >Indian dude was nicknamed 'Sniper' because of the red dot on his forehead. The guys would mime loading a rifle and shooting him.
    >You can say that was all in good fun, but after a month of his 'friends' pretending to shoot him, he quit.

I don't have any good advice other than just eat healthy, avoid smoking, and wear your damn PPE. Try your best to avoid weekday drinking: Those calories add up.

    Drink water during the summer.
Stretch and flex in the morning no matter if you get called a gay, thats better than having a hernia or sprained muscle. Hold your powertools the proper way. 3 weeks ago i sprained my wrist with a drill in gear 1.
Drink water in the winter also because you'll get dehidrated if you drink too much coffee or energy drinks.
