It's pretty unremarkable, what's curious is they don't have a massively larger economy than russia. Note Texas is 29 million, Australia is 26 million, both bigger economies. Spain is 40 plus million.

Not sure if GDP is a great representation of how well off a region is economically. Technically, if a country produced and used everything within its own borders, its GDP would be zero.

We will end up buying some B variants for the carrier and maybe a fe A or maybe some extra B variants like the UK to partly replace the F-18 along with the eurofighters. The FCAS isnt coming until 2040 at the minimun.

Everyone in Europe is raising their budgets because of Ukraine, including us. It isnt even a secret that perro sanxe is going to announce a raise in our defense budget during the NATO meeting in Madrid. Furthermore spanish generals have been seen around LM offices several times already. The asw patrol planes will be replaced by the C-295 ASW variant btw, they are just laying low because we were supposed to join the french and the german to buy them together, but it was a mess because we all wanted to propose our own thing. We wanted the C-295 as they are made by casa, the french wanted a new plane based around an airbus a319 I think as they assemble most of it in France, and the germans wanted Boeings P-8 as it was the cheaper option because it was already made for the USA.

                Anonymous

As of now the only one that has commited to buy something is Germany, as the P-8 won the contest. Spain is trying to backpedal to buy the C-295 and France, despite wanting to do their own thing, as always, will most probably end up buying the P-8 as making a whole new plane in their own will end up being very expensive and they need a long range plane for their maritime territories.

To be independent from america and grow your own military industry, as almost everytime that some western country decides to buy their own thing instead of buying from them.

                Anonymous

But then why aren’t they making it? If it’s mostly French made they can’t complain to other European countries for no involvement or investment.

                Anonymous

Because they expected the costs of developing a new plane to be shared with the other countries, and doing the whole thing in their own (along with the sale loses of missing the other 2 countries orders) would make the economical loses too significant to continue.
When developing your own thing its mostly about how much money you are willing to sink on it.

Spain (47 military population)is a mino because they spend 1.2% of their GDP on defence and have a capability that's equivalent to Canada's (37 million). Which is why they get mogged by countries like Australia (26 million) that double their defence spend.

Basically Europe is a joke and the best allies to have are UK, Japan and Australia. Everyone is a fricking joke and we should stop allying with them.

Spain is going to go as far as possible to avoid buying American planes, and American weapons in general, as an example take the tenders to replace the army transport and attack helicopters back in the late 90's/early 2000's, the contenders were the apache and tiger for attack and nh90 and blackhawk for utility/transport, the army wanted both the blackhawk and the apache, but the goverment chose the nh90 and tiger instead, the Apache and Blackhaw were cheaper, better and battle tested platforms and the Tiger and the NH90 weren't in mass production. Well the goverment did the right thing chosing them instead the Apache/Blackhawk, why?, because the conditions set by the State department for weapon sales to any country that is not Israel, UK, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Australia and right now Ukraine.

Every contract stipulates that, in case of conflict, you need to ask approval of the DoE to use it, for most of the european countries this is not an issue, the only foe they are going to face is Russia, unless they join some international mission and these are more or less blessed by Washington, but not Spain.
Spain only have two probable "foes" around, one is UK, but going to war with them (or going to war with us) is as remote as having an asteroid crashing in Madrid, not going to happen. But the other one is Morocco, we have a big diplomatic crisis with them almost every year and almost ended in a limited military clash ten years ago during the Perejil island crisis, there's a fair probability to have a military clash between spain and morocco, specially when Rabat has an internal crisis and need some distraction (usually is us or Algeria).

Morocco is a longtime ally of USA, so no way they are going to allow to use any USA weapon system against them, Spain have zero chances of getting any diplomatic support against Morocco so the only thing left is having some kind of military deterrence.

If you have your best fighters grounded there's no deterrence at all.

      Anonymous

And before someone asks, yes, both DoE and DoD have ways to make sure the use conditions on these supply contracts are not violated, this goes from forcing you to have the equipment serviced only by designated technicians than can be evacuated at any moment notice, to ration spare parts so you can't stock them and are totally dependent of America's good will to make them work, to kill switches that kill the weapon systems (remember how they bricked the Iranian Phoenix missiles when the Ayatolahs took over Iran).

And yes, this has happened before, during the Ifni war Spain had their fleet of brand new sabres and P-80's shooting stars grounded by Washington order, it was so bad we had to bring out some mothballed He111's bombers back to service because they were the only thing left to use.

From there we only buy French planes and now, the ones from Airbus.

If you have your best fighters grounded there's no deterrence at all.

      and you'll understand why.

At the end they will buy some of them to replace the acient Harriers on the Juan Carlos I, but that's all.
