Am I wrong for burning my camping garbage?

When I go camping I burn basically all waste that is capable of physically fitting in the fire pit. My rationale is that I don't want some garbage bag full of trash/food waste attracting animals. Am I wrong for doing this?

this is fine if the shit you throw in actually burns to ash. carboard, tp, paper, sure. not plastics or synthetic things. regardless, an animal like a bear would be drawn to the smell of food that was there even if you have since burned the waste, so it won’t actually do much to protect

Are you in bear country? If not just keep the bag away from your campsite and the worst is some rodents get into it. Also like the other anon said don't burn synthetics and bears will still smell it if they are around

      Yes. Black and grizzly bears

Bears still come after burnt food. Better make sure its reduced to ashes

Its hot enough to melt glass bottles and aluminum beer cans in under a minute, so I assume anything organic (food) is being completely volatilized.

if you're doing it to avoid attracting bears and you're in black bear and grizzly country then you need to just suck it up and bring a bear can.
if you're doing it just because you don't want to pack out your trash, i would say its preferrable to littering, but not by a whole lot if you're burning plastics. cans are lined with plastics btw.

    >the digits of an angel, purging all wrong with fire
    Burn it all, OP.
Better than a scrap of plastic flying away and being part of the nature for the next century. Most of what you bring home and put in the green recycle bin ends up in the general garbage pile anyway- and many places dont case the bottom with concrete and suck out the leeching cancer liquid that builds up- so it goes down into the earth.
Better to let absolutely all of the trees and plant life around you help filter that black smoke than to let the ground water and soil reap the consequences.
    >but its bad to burn plastic
This is the thought of someone who has never seen a freeway, been to a store with plstic products everywhere, or knows the existence of china or india; or a delusional fool. Contrary to popular (which is often wrong) thought, burning is a cleaner method of trash disposal.

Could you cite a source for that?

Apparently the message you took from that meme was "the right approach is to just automatically believe whatever a stranger tells you, even if it clashes with your prior understanding"

also if nobody told you, turkey bags from the grocery store work better than any of those smell proof bags they market to hikers and druggies like opsaks and shit. one of those and a bear can, leave it a distance from where you sleep, hi-vis tape if you're worried about losing it. problem solved.

In black bear country there is no need, but grizzly country you are advised to FULLY burn all your trash and do it well away from your tent because campfires also attract grizzlies -Alaska anon.

Yes, we found that out later when we opened it and extracted a black coal plate.

You are supposed to add water first. Who would have thunk?
