Am I going to die from a cold dip?

I did a quick dip in a river the other day, no training, kind of spur of the moment. It was snowing and the temperature was right around freezing, idk the water's temp. Was fun, would like to do it again. I understood that there may be adverse effects so while I was drying off I did a multiplication problem in my head to make sure I was thinking straight. I only forgot to carry a ten which is pretty par for the course for me. I went back to my car (probably 50 feet up, gentle incline) and got warmed up and drove home without problem. Then I looked up tips for next time.

Apparently you can fricking die? Like I get shock (at least I think I do) but I was perfectly fine. Then they say stuff like practice with warmer water and I was like I was fine? They say to never do it alone it's so dangerous. So I'm rethinking.

I've always thought it was safe so long as you have a plan to dry off and warm up after. Ever since Apetor died I'm not so sure. He was a crazy Norwegian youtuber who did cold dips for fifty years. Died doing a cold dip. At least he died doing what he loved.

I had a towel and the aforementioned walk and car waiting for me. Was he just too old?

what do you think of heaven anon? i warned you there was a shortage of chairs

I'll go to confession before cold dip, simple.

Yes. Ya lil pussy will get clapped.

I don't mind dying but I'd hate to do that to my wife and family. One aspect of marriage I didn't foresee. I have to stay alive for someone else.

moron he died from shock from accidentally falling into ice and not being able to get back up, not a controlled cold dip.

You shouldn't plunge in water and if you are in water for long time you shouldn't lie down afterwards

I recall a memory from long ago. My friend's grandmother told me that her son, a young man, had died from a sudden heart attack when he jumped into a cold swimming pool.

But that's why you're testing yourself easy does it style, right? Just get to know your capabilities and don't go crazy. Personally I sieze up when faced with sudden extreme cold, my spine goes stiff and I feel like I want to close up like a deckchair, so I know that it's not for me.

Yes I am certainly not jumping into this water. I go knee-deep then sit down then lean back to get my head under. The natural bodies of water around me are simply put not warm at any time of year. They don't feel much colder when it's snowing than they do during summer, although that's obviously going to do with the air/water temperature difference.

    allied healthƒag here

recently have come to know of an ongoing case at a nearby hospital where a 10yo kid did a plunge in some very cold water on a hot day. it triggered a rare autoimmune response that damaged his optic and auditory nerves, and over about 2 days has become entirely deaf and blind. permanently and is now essentially floating through space in isolation for the rest of his life. he has already expressed his wish to die.

    so yeah

Sounds like bullshit. If it isn’t, mind sharing some further reading material on this?

I don't have further details but it might be similar to that autoimmune thingo Ashton Kutcher has

Lucky he was vaccinated 2 weeks earlier so he wasn't vulnerable while I'm hospital

I can’t stand pussies like you. You’re right next to a warm car. My 59-year-old mother does this is far, far colder temperatures, except she doesn’t even drive so she’ll always have to take a 30 min walk back home.

Are you larping? You either dipped just your toes or that water was very warm...or most likely larping. I've dipped in the river on my land that's typically around 45 degrees in the summer due to its source. With the fast flowing water stripping the heat off of me when I sit in it for fifteen minutes it takes hours to warm up on a sunny day in August, and youre telling me you did the same and just casually walked back to your car and warmed yourself back up with no problems in the winter? Ok Wim Hof.

I guess by your standards I just dipped my toe in. I only stayed in for about a minute, in a part of a river that kind of pooled up so there wasn't a fast current. My question more related to shock which happens soon after you get in.

Ok then you don't have anything to worry about. If it was "fun" the water was likely in the upper 50s still. 40s is going to feel sharp/brisk. 30s is brutal, and can kill you from shock.
Have you ever put your hand in water so cold it felt like someone was instantly stabbing 1000 needles into it and you lost feeling in your hand very quickly? That's what water hovering around freezing feels like and jumping into that can kill you in more ways than one.

Cool, thank you. I usually measure water temperature by how numb I feel coming out and it was certainly the coldest I'd ever been in. For reference I was in Washington state at around 1500 feet.

Perfectly normal around here. Just don't jump in the water and possibly get lost under the ice. That is if you even have ice you can walk on. We have these movable ladders we put on the edge of the ice hole so that we can get back up

What the frick are these americuck responses in this thread? You have to be a total pussy to think you'd die or get some permanent damage just from dipping in cold water. I often go on a jog, find a hole in the ice, strip my clothes, get in for a while then get back up, put my clothes on and jog back home.
