M777 was a cheap plentiful ultralight gun that can be moved with a normal car, but it mostly a bandaid fix for the 152 to 155mm conversion. Ultralight materials arnt meant for launching thousands of rounds between mx cycles and is a bit more fragile. However they could get to the front lines in like 2 days compared to the more cumbersome SPGs and there was a lot of them so they mostly held down the front until the bigger guns arrived. Remember the M777 orginal purpose is a mountain gun you can airlift for rapid forward deployment
The reason they sent m777 is because they had a new batch lying around, ready to be shipped. The USA is not in war-economy mode and is ramping up very, very slowly, so everything they send to Poland, Czechia and Ukraine is either freshly out of the factories or freshly out of long-term storage.
US sent M777's because they were light, and could be easily airlifted straight from storage to an airbase just across the border, used shells that were already store in massive depots in europe, and required minimal training for the ukrainians to use.
