The northern states treated the southern states like colonies. When people say "states rights" they don't fully understand what they are talking about. The north was the seat of government power and manufacturing, the south was used as the source of their raw materials and was treated as lesser than the colonies in the north in terms of deals, benefits, and government power. If you are interested in learning about this in extensive detail I would recommend this book.
As far as southern pride in the general sense, life is different. Landscapes are different. There's a lot more space and a different attitude in the south.

history time Black person. first it wasnt a civil war, as defined by two groups attempting to take control of a single body politic. this was the usa invading raping and burning the csa- because taxes to the fed were import export taxes the south before it suseeded , of which the south paid almost all of them. the fed spent all that sweet sweet tax on centrla improvement projects exclusively in the north, in an attempt to out compete europe. the south was like frick it well just build our own ports and trains and shit and stop paying taxes to the fed. so they split and formed their own republic/confederation, the rest is history.
