A cop was waiting at my car last night when I was out hunting. I came back 5:30, it was dead dark by then. He asked for my license and hunting license and the typical what are you doing out here, where are you from, etc. Wtf? Why would he have been out at a random park ok mg spot? I did nothing illegal and he just stopped and quizzed me. It was obvious that I was out hunting since I had my bow and orange on. Does this happen to you other hunters and is this normal? Can he do it again to on a different day at the same spot?

he's a federal agent and you're in danger, use some camouflage netting interwoven with your native brush to hide your vehicle when hunting, and don't use orange either, its like a beacon to them

Let's say I killed a deer at the tail end of shooting hours. I was 20-30 minutes from my car without being loaded up with a deer. Field dress plus the hike out and I might not get back until 7-7:15 if I killed at 5:30. Would he think I was poaching? how would I prove that I killed at a legal hour?

They have to prove you guilty, you don't have to prove yourself innocent.

I mean it’s pretty obvious what’s happening here even from your basic description. If you hunt in a place that you wear orange, oof. If you actually took anything you would’ve had it with you, making his line of questioning irrelevant. Maybe you should learn to hunt, coyotes for example, and then work on the harder stuff.

    >He either has to let you leave, or detain you. If he detains you he has to have reason to believe that you have committed a crime.
In an ideal world. Cops can pretty much do what they want they just have to do some legal gymnastics that will almost always fall in their favor in court. They can literally kill you and will almost always get away with it unless you're a minority and it provokes a media chimpout

I’ve had it fishing a bunch of times, especially when I’m parked near businesses and fishing dusk on a Saturday at these lakes in commercial or industrial areas. They’re almost always cool when they see the fishing rod and not a crow bar.

NTA but PA only requires hunters to wear orange, and only certain amounts of it depending on what they're hunting. I go out and wear whatever I want, pisses off the boomers something fierce but they can't walk their fat asses to where I camp anyway.

Yeah in Wyoming you only have to wear one piece. There's a hat I see out here alot that people wear thats just a 2x4" patch on the back.
I grew up in WV and was always decked out in orange. Too many drunk dipshits out there

    Regular cops don't handle poaching.
Game wardens do. And their powers are kinda ridiculous and in blatant violation of the 4th amendment imo.

If it was a just a regular cop this guy is right:

I was driving through Utah recently and realized I left my wallet in the RTT. i pulled off the road outside of town ( in a weird ATV area) and opened the tent to grab my wallet. As soon as I had it unfolded I saw a cop coming down the road and immediately knew he was coming to talk to me. Pulled over and asked what I was doing.
      >"Think I left something up here"
      >"Oh gotcha" walks up to look in my windows
      >"Is there something wrong?"
      >"No, just keep in mind you can't camp here"
      >"Thanks, wasn't planning on it"
      >Gets in car and leaves

Like c'mon dipshit, obviously I'm not setting up right next to the highway at 10 AM to camp in your shitty hodunk town.

Its not really that serious. Most of the time when i get calls of parked vehicles along the treeline during hunting season, i just run the tags to see if its an abandoned or stolen vehicle. Its a good thing too, since a few years ago we had an old hunter who broke his leg falling out of a tree stand, and the day before we ran his plates and had a general area to search for him.

You could have asked him, in all honesty. Not sure you would've gotten a completely truthful answer but after he checks everything and you're good to go he had no real reason to lie.

Cops cannot legally ask for your hunting license in most states. He could sue for hunter harassment if this actually happened.

  26. 6 months ago

    A) You only need to show him the tag if you actually caught something.
    B) your first response should be "am I suspected of a crime? If not I'm leaving"--and leave"
    C) If they keep asking questions say "I don't have to answer your questions"
    stop empowering these doushbags.
