5.56 For Home Defense?

I live in an inner city. Swarthsville USA. crime is high. Everywhere I look, I am recommended to use 5.56 as my home defense caliber because of its effectiveness and how it loses a lot of said effectiveness when encountering a wall, relative to other calibers.

I still worry about over-penetration and hurting my neighbors. What type of 5.56 should I use?

Still in my lurking phase, forgive any moronation

This. Also, get a handgun if you’re worried about killing your neighbors. It’s more maneuverable indoors anyway.

It's counter-intuitive but a basic b***h AR is LESS of an overpen risk than a 9mm pistol with hollow points.

Yes, I am aware. However, what ammunition should I use to minimize overpen entirely? 5.56 is a caliber, I would just like to know what ammunition to use. For example, FMJ is a bad idea. HP makes sense, but is there any one that is recommended?

critical defense is intended to underpenetrate but that includes black people as much as drywall

I held my own in the ghetto just on fear and reputation. Fended off home invasions with melee weapons, scared the shit out of them, just ran off. Burglars make a mental equation of "is it worth it" and run off if the fear is too strong.

As for reputation, I've had thugs apologize to me for trying to shake me down. I just naturally befriended these types, even though I didn't do crime, but because the local gangs often police the neighborhood. They basically had a monopoly on force, but I had my own castle and my own force. The gangs and cartel respected this.

Another thing is to have no fear of death. That helps. Should also show kindness and compassion to the homeless and hungry, not because it will earn you respect on the street, but because it's the right thing to do.

Anyways that's my advice for surviving the violence of the ghetto and even making things a bit better for the community.

I think it would be good to have programs for unemployed or at risk youth to go out hunting and fishing. Like to drive out of the hood, into the woods, and use those guns to hunt and feed and provide. Instead of people going hungry and hunting each other for territory to sell crack and stuff. That shit is tragic and painful.

I know how to survive in the ghetto. I've lived here most my life. I do agree with pretty much everything said here and I genuinely appreciate the support nonetheless. Thank you, anon.

Just use ball ammo. It loses a lot of momentum already when it hits drywall.

Noone has been able to provide evidence of a single case a civilian involved shooting where overpenetration hurt or killed a bystander. Use whatever you think is best.

77gr SMK loaded to at least 2700 fps(don't buy the 2600 fps fiocchi shit). Federal makes a 77gr SMK load rated for 2790, IIRC

You are kind. I will look into this. Thank you. What difference does 2700 vs 2600 make aside from 100 fps?

at home distances, nothing. It will effect how far out you can achieve effective fragmentation, but we're talking hundreds of yards not 5 or 50 yards. I just resent them selling a cold load

I appreciate it, but I'm talking about my inner city home. The longest dimension in my home is maybe 20m, tops.

it's all the same shit, the only difference is the barrel length they used to get that velocity.

just buy a gen 5 glock 21, buy an extra 4 magazines and use winchester 230gr fmj, you will kill everything in sight using .45acp.

or get an old fashioned 20 inch barrel ar15 and use 55gr fmj 5.56 ammo

Black Hills 77 gr TMK, or other companies’ loadings of 77 gr TMK failing that

The polymer tip makes it expand on contact with hard barriers and also tissue while still attaining comfortable penetration against exposed targets out of a 16” barrel. Basically fricks shit up harder and more consistently than 77 gr SMK while penetrating through fewer walls.

Now make no mistake, this is still a heavy 5.56 round with 12+ inches of gel penetration which means it’s pretty much going to still go through a considerable amount of drywall by design, but unless you can source Mk255 or something this is pretty much the “I win” button for home defense

    >picrel, exit wound on someone’s durr from a 77 gr TMK

With few exceptions gnore plastic tipped bullets below 70gr(like the varmint load on your pic). Examples of good projectiles are 62gr fusion, 55/62gr TBBC, 62gr nosler BSB, 55/62/75gr gold dot, 50/55/62/70gr TSC, 75gr TAP T2, 77gr TMK. Any quality load using these are good. Ignore 55gr FMJ and 69/77gr SMKs, they work great when they work but tend to fail to fragment a concerning amount resulting in .22 holes in the intended target. They are much better than nothing though and work most of the time if barrel length is long enough. Ignore shitty import steel cas ammo if you have any other choice.

Any recommendations for short-barrel AR-15? Looking to make an SBR for my main home-defense weapon.

77gr smk is good enough, don’t frick with vermin rounds in 556 they don’t penetrate humans deep enough. 77gr is NOT barrier blind, but it and any other round will still go through drywall, so don’t miss.

75gr out of a short barrel or 55gr from a 16" at HD distances for minimizing potential collateral from a missed shot?
