3M22 Zircon can be shot down by traditional air defense

https://kyivindependent.com/air-force-ukraine-can-down-zircon-hypersonic-missile-with-patriot-samp-t/
"The speed of the Zircon missile is approximately 8-9 Mach or about 10,000 kilometers per hour. When it enters the strike trajectory, its speed drops to about Mach 4.5, according to Yevlash.

"At this moment, we can use our anti-ballistic systems. These are SAMP/T, Patriot, which can inflict powerful damage and shoot down even such weapons," the spokesperson said."

Your average US Patriot or French-Italian SAMP/T can take on those flying sausages, also proving it's incapable of actual hypersonic maneuvers if it dips to mach 4.5 for terminal guidance. So much for "muh gibersonic" junk.

And it could very well be a copy of the Waverider, it’s that Russia hasn’t released any photos of the weapon yet. It may not even be air-breathing at all for all we know.

Patriot PAC2 and above are specialized in ballistic missile defense so even full hypersonic missiles can be intercepted. If the Zircon must slow down to Mach 4.5 during terminal flight then the Russians couldn’t solve the plasma issue. People assume HAWC solves it but I don’t know if it’s stated anywhere specifically that it has — if it turns out to be a different version of Zircon that’ll be somewhat embarrassing.

Hypersonic is a buzzword that just refers to shit faster than Mach 5. It gets used like it's something new when in reality the specific designs are boost gliders and airbreathing scramjets. The hypersanics in caps was supposed to denote the intention of his post anon.

            Anonymous

You're missing the entire point of the "hypersonic arms race".

Hypersonic is a media simplification for hypersonic weapons capable of atmospheric maneuvers, not just in space, and during all flight phases including terminal guidance. Hypersonic gliders are one of multiple kinds of hypersonic weapons.

The Kinzhal for instance is just an iskander SRBM strapped onto a MiG-31K. The Iskander is already hypersonic, but Russia claimed it was an actually new design capable of hypersonic maneuvers. Everyone including the Chinese saw that it's just a straight running weapon no more capable than your regular ballistic missile.

Then came the Zirkon superweapon capable of singlehandedly destroying the US Navy. Which also turned out to be a meme, since it can't do any hypersonic maneuvers during its terminal phase.

Russia does NOT have any modern hypersonic weapon, they're stretching the truth using older designs that can only be hypersonic for a short moment during the initial boost phase, and can still be intercepted by existing systems.

In the Russian mind, if something has a gyroscope, it can be a ballistic or a cruise missile even if it was never designed for the task. That's why most of their heavy SAMs since the 1950s have a ground attack mode, why their first anti-ship missiles were pilotless MiG-15s with the flight command linked to the gyro (That's for the KS-1 Komet, the P-15 Termit was based on the Yak-1000 instead)

What you really want to do is to use a scaled down version the the Sprint ABM booster as a terminal phase. The idea is just when the enemy gets close with their interceptors the missile stages and then shoots up to mach 10 and stays that fast until it hits the target.

IIRC there was also a UN report yesterday that found that yes, in fact, the Russians have been doing warcrimes all the frick over the place in occupied territory. Not that Russians care, but having an independent report like that makes it harder for them to pull an "is hohol lies!" about things (not that they won't anyways, but still).

It’s much, much too little. 18k shells is a drop in the bucket. I’m sure they need as many engineering vehicles as they can get and every few extra drones helps — but that’s not what they NEED, desperately, NOW. They need HUNDREDS of heavy SPGs, MILLIONS of shells, HUNDREDS of AD platforms, HUNDREDS of armored vehicles (at least!).

I’m not hating on Europe or doing the Germany-bad thing, the fact is they’re poor and not financially able to just switch on a major MIC increase at the snap of the fingers. Biden’s lack of use of Lend-Lease (not one cent was used by it) may have been a war-losing mistake.

    >Analyzing its maneuverability, the Chinese analyst observes, “The degree to which it can change its ballistic trajectory cannot be compared with that of a real hypersonic missile, and it seriously lacks the ability to maneuver laterally.”
    >this Chinese defense analyst next admits: “There is more and more evidence showing that what the U.S. and Ukraine say on this matter is true.”

    >Your average US Patriot or French-Italian SAMP/T can take on those flying sausages
So what you're telling me is that a large russian sausage attempted to penetrate an undefended ukrainian rear, but was instead obliterated by a local patriot? If only the russians could keep their own rears so well protected, I heard they've been experiencing many such unwanted penetrations...
