i can't even tell what was going on during the exchange, were Ukrainians wearing white armbands? it looked like there were about a dozen ukie soldiers with no ruskie one present.

Well, their BMPs also carried white flags, so I'm guessing the white arm bands do not mean Russians, but just the "neutral" flag.

It was kind of cute and bizarro seeing Prigozhin going all the way to get an US flag in the middle of Bakhmut to use it on the coffin. (He also found a Turkish one for the other coffin). • 11 months ago
      Anonymous

It's to enable use of the firing ports on either side of the BMP. It was a meme at the time because theorists on either side believed that they could opt to have their infantry fight from inside their vehicles, particularly during NBC operations so that the crews wouldn't be exposed to outside air. The Bradley has them too, but unlike the BMP it actually has room inside. However they found out that was moronic because those same infantry couldn't aim for shit in a moving vehicle, so APC/IFV designs ended up dropping them completely.

In fact I think the only instance I've ever seen of them being used was DPR fighters firing from inside a (still) BTR back in 2014.

        Anonymous

Thanks anon. I guess that somewhat rationalizes the weird (by todays standards) layout. I still think that someone at the design bureau must have been thinking "this layout prevents the troops inside from seeing and talking to each other and prevents them from exchanging gear or applying first aid". It's weird that they still went with it, and didn't redesign it later to fix the pretty major problem

Soviet military science regards the common soldier as an expendable fighting robot to be exploited, they weren't big on human considerations.

There was a whole bunch of Russian videos from the start of the war involving mostly BTRs that demonstrated that the first instinct of professional Russian troops (this was before calling up the reservists and the mass mobilization) is to cram inside the BTR and wildly fire out of the ports. Or in one case, panic and wildly fire out of the rear door because it refused to close.

          >i think ifvs in general are metal coffins for soldiers. but even more so for soviet ifvs. you'r back seat is literally gasoline

IFV fill that role between infantry and light tanks. Obviously MBT are big and cool but they also cost a lot and you'd bankrupt yourself if you put MBT everywehre. So you make light tanks. But then you need something intermediate to that too. Enter IFV. They support infantry with their big guns and can deploy troops. A light tank, IFV's, and infantry can storm a position.

They give the speed that Ukrainians need.

          Anonymous

IFV aren't meant to fight tanks, but meant to fight infantry with infantry support. They show up, drop off some infantry, and provide cover and support fire.

Then why do so many of them get ATGMs?

              Anonymous

Because 10lbs of munitions + wiring is a pretty cheap trade off to not have to instantly bail the moment there is a tank in the area, plus an ATGM is pretty good at fricking up heavy infantry emplacements.

Oh, on a vehicle-to-vehicle basis they are awful. But these were purely made for mass (and wartime) production, like everything else the Soviets made. To them, having technological inferiority to western IFVs wasn't that much of an issue if they could shit out 3 for every Bradley. And around the 70's-mid 80's the tech gap wasn't THAT large - BMP-2 on paper could go toe to toe with the early Bradley and defeat the Marder - even then its typical opponent was expected to be the humble M113. The firepower on the 2's and 3's is still nothing to laugh at (until it explodes of course) - Ukrainians early in the war reported just how punishing a hail of 30mm from a company's worth of BMPs is.

IMO the thin skin on the BMPs is what really kills them more than anything else - they fight by the company and then die by the company upon receiving any IDF. In our wargames it was pretty much mandatory to make sure that every MRC got hit with at least one fire mission; the first one (if 155mm, but mortars were also punishing) reduced them by 50% or more each time, allowong them to be defeated by platoons of even M113 riding infantry. Failure to do so meant getting overrun with that 30mm hailstorm - if it got within close range a Soviet MRC was probably the deadliest small formation on account of all that firepower... but so many things had to go right for them to actually get within said range intact.

          >mid 80s
Let me scale that back to probably ~1982. The tech gap (with respect to ground forces) was pretty pronounced from there on.

          >3 BMPs roll up within range of a Bradley
          >Bradley sees bright pink silhouettes appear from behind a hill
          >Bradley lases, FCS gives accurate range
          >1st and 2nd BMPs brew up immediately before they have any idea what's going on
          >by the time the 3rd sees the Bradley's vague position it only has a stadia reticle so it's still trying to get range when it also dies
          >Even if it did somehow get a firing solution in time, the 30mm either misses completely or bounces at the range the Bradley engaged
          >Bradley disengages and relocates to do it all over again

There has been some specultaion that their tank-like appearance has given their operators a false sense of security. It really is their poor armor that makes them very weak. Total glass cannons. A lot of Soviet designs are perfectly fine, but BMP's are just a mess.

have the Ukies tried to outfit more armor on the ones they've captured?

            Anonymous

Either side has been using improvised armor but no concrete up-armoring has been done. Main survival strategy for the Ukie BMP is simply "don't get hit in the first place". It's worth noting that Ukraine has lost over 100% of it's starting BMP-1s (and that over 100% is due to the large amount of Russian captures) but only 50% of their starting BMP-2s, it's the other way around for the Russians having lost a fraction of their 1's and a majority of their 2's.

            >have the Ukies tried to outfit more armor on the ones they've captured?
this has been done consistently since bmp-1 in pretty much all operators. Even ziggers. Thing is, like german tanks of WW2, there is a limit how much the frame and engine can handle the exra weight

all of this and dont forge they were made in the era where crossing rivers with amphibs were all the rage. thus the thin skin as it was meant to be able swim across the rhine and other badzillion rivers running across euro

Pity. She could've provided some much-needed... comfort to the lads.

Surprised the Rusnigs have any women willing to fight for them, especially considering the Russian army is famous for turning female auxiliaries into forced prostitutes and comfort women for higher-ranking officers. They aren't subject to conscription or mobilization, so they have to volunteer.
