How the hell can you still underestimate Russian incompetence after hundreds of frick ups?

They have probably already killed shitloads of Ukrainian POWs through mistreatment and neglect. The Russian treatment of POWs is brutal. They'll take the opportunity to hide the deaths as this most likely.

Remember how Ukrainian MOD asked its citizens not to "speculate" or distribute "rumors" about F-16, about a month ago? I do.
Spoiler: it's not F-16, it's actually Mirage 2000. The French began a year earlier than the dutchies, Danes and belgians. F16 still take another 8 months.

I saw something today that the first Ukrainian pilot finished his F-16 training in the last week

Maybe the training is only complete after a certain number of live fire exercises?

        Anonymous

Keep in mind that a plane needs more than a pilot. The ground crews for servicing and preparing the machine need training, too. The logistics chain must be set up properly. These are very complex machines.
Like, the dutchies started building F-16 parts (through Fokker) in 1977, still their first F-16 (US-built) was only delivered in 1979. The entire procurement and preparation for F-16's went on for years before the first went into service.

    Seems harder to hide.
There are only a limited number of known strips of concrete aircraft can live in, even if kept under a hanger most of the time, Russia and half of OSINT twitter is watching by satellite.
It's a much more anticipated project with a lot more media attention, a lot more Ukrainians and Americans have to be involved over a longer period of time, a lot more civilians recognize an F-16 on sight. It would be hard to make sure not a single overexcited person leaks something.
I was surprised they managed to do HIMARs without some anonymous source rushing to blab to CNN.

Just like all previous wunderwaffen, the Russians will deny its presence until they can't anymore, and then start saying it's ineffective. The screeching about nooks only comes before they're delivered, because its only purpose is to stop the deliveries.

        >OSINT twitter can't do shit with anything not squawking on ADS-B
I meant they literally buy satellite time to look at sites of interest like airfields.
When you see satellite photos of fortifications, damage to Russian ships in port, etc, a lot or even most of that comes from spergs paying for commercial images.
And even standard internet autism like trawling telegram for loose lipped rumors and geolocatable photos can reveal a major delivery.

I don't think Ukie pilots and groundcrew could resist making pictures and videos of their new toy.

But be careful hyping it up too much. As sexy and good as the F-16 is, it's just another weapon. Some will be lost to Russian fire.

Ukraine will never get the license or factories to make them. It won't happen for at least another decade (and they will probably choose the Gripen anyway)

Yes but the F-16 is too expensive for Ukraine to operate and maintain and it does not suit their airfields as well as the Gripen. They would need to import Americans from overseas who know the 50-year-old aircraft well enough to di everything for them

You maximise the initial impact of the system by delivering it early and then keeping its presence a secret as long as possible in order to retain the element of surprise even if the enemy knows its coming

Too bad US aid deal is completely dead. HIMARS will be out of missiles soon and that is that. Pretty sure the F-16 deal also relied on US aid to keep them operational. Whole situation is FUBAR.
