Battlefield 3 predicted this.......
On June 16, 1739, a group of participants in the Second Kamchatka Expedition under the command of Martyn Shpanberg reached the shores of Japan for the first time in Russian history. Navigators not only opened the route to this country, but also mapped a number of the Kuril Islands. According to historians, Shpanberg made a significant contribution to the study of the Far East and strengthening Russia's position in this region.
"Bering's closest assistant"
The surviving data on the time and place of birth of Martyn Shpanberg are contradictory. However, historians agree that he comes from Denmark. Spanberg was born in 1696 or 1698. In his youth, he mastered the profession of a sailor and in 1720 or 1721 entered the naval service in Russia. According to surviving documents, in 1726 he held the rank of lieutenant.
It is known that in 1724 Spanberg commanded a packet boat that delivered mail and passengers to the North German city of Lubeck. However, after returning to Russia, his life took a sharp turn. Shpanberg was taken under his command by another Dane who was in Russian service - Vitus Bering, the leader of the First Kamchatka Expedition.
