I wouldn't. Japan did not suffer from anything until they got their shit kicked in during WW2. Literally just play it cool when you want to expand again, and choose the winning side so you can conquer China without getting your oil cut off. Also be more discrete or at least western in the way you subjugate them so the world doesn't fear for the heckin chinerinos.

Why would I want to? If anything I hop on board with ol' Commy P and start designing Browning style firearms a couple decades early

The problem was never Japan's opening, but the lack of proper democracy.

you might want to be sitting down for this one, but Japanese soldiers and even the fabled samurai were not a death cult at the time, or indeed any time until the very tail end of WWII and this would have been a horrifying suggestion rejected out of hand.

Do nothing except warn them that Teddy Roosevelt will negotiate Russia extremely extremely generous terms in the aftermath of the Russo-Japanese war and that machine guns will inflict pyrrhic losses on their troops during that conflict. Once Korea is secured they must hold off on expanding into China and the south east pacific until they are in a more diplomatically secure situation to avoid the unwinnable resource deficit that the Sino-Japanese war created and directly led to the entry and subsequent loss in WW2

Nothing, Perry basically saved Japan. If it weren't for him they'd basically be as stagnant as China, possibly more so.

  13. 1 year ago

Why would I? Commodore Perry was a blessing to Japan because contrary to China they managed to keep a hold of their country instead of being exploited by bigger powers while getting all that juicy access to western advancements on their own terms. Post Russo-Japanese war is another story. They would've needed to get a hold of the army to not drag them into an unwinnable war like in our timeline but that would be difficulty because the army was high on its own fumes after defeating what was supposedly a great western power (Russia, lmao).

I do not resist Perry's westernization. That would result in nothing but suffering for Japan.
What I do instead is prepare for the Boxer Rebellion and strategically place the Japanese army in such a way as to make the 8-Nation Alliance to relieve Peking superfluous; all credit to save the legations and extirpate the Boxer militia would fall upon Japan's shoulders, and I (meaning Japan) would then argue that my knowledge of the inscrutable orient would make me (meaning Japan) a better guardian of East Asia's colonial future, pre-empting the East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere without any diplomatic trouble. China would fall suzerain to Japan, with relatively open markets (under Japanese mediation) to the European great powers. Japan's government of China would be ensure oriental products flowing into Western hands, thus making Japan an essential partner in the imperial ambitions of the West, and not a rival, or worse, a subject.

That's fine and all but Japan created the Empire specifically because it was butthurt over being snubbed in global treaty and trade negotiations at the turn of the century by Europeans so it said frick all yall imma go ham in this here asian oceania

said they probably would have been taken much more seriously by European powers. I don't see them becoming suzerain of China especially due to the work Britain did in the opium wars prying the country open for trade but I do see them being treated as an equal partner. Not recognized as a great power, at least not until after the Russo-Japanese war, but with Manchuria in hand and recognized as a peer they might be given control of German Asian colonial possessions post WWI and would be in a much better position to negotiate with Chinese nationalists on establishing an allied, likely dependant (for a few decades at least) government out of the warring states period.

they sure as shit fixed the issue right up when it bothered them, i tell you hwat.

          >the work Britain did in the opium
It is my distinct impression that the eight nation alliance was pushed to keep Japan from owning Chinese trade lock stock and barrel, and the EACPS was designed so the other colonial powers could keep their mitts on SEAsia property directly. Frankly, Japan might have started WWII if the Euros hadn't, because it was vibrantly aware of the white people in their backyard

#1 - Japanese are extremely racist to none Japanese, even today. They wouldn't have liked or accepted anyone reading this.
#2 - Old era whites were extremely racist and distrusting, especially on a war ship. You'd have to dress like them and talk like them to get near without being arrested or shot.

You can't the Tokugawa was rotten to the core by that time, they weren't kidding when they called it the 'Meiji Restoration'
any competent shogunate could have fielded a coastal defense and told Perry to pound sand but the 'gawas were so effete and frail and set in their ways they couldn't imagine not fighting in the "samurai way" but that is not the natural state of the Japanese, they are highly effective warfighters in every regard usually
